Just bought my first stock as an individual investor.....
Posted by white perch on 1/13/14 at 2:58 pm00
....it is an ETF, PBS, it was no commission through my Schwab account. I bought one whole share (I'm a timid investor).
I've got retirement through work and a separate 457 plan, but this is my first venture into the stock market as an individual.
I'll have a lot of questions for y'all as things progress.

FWIW it is an ETF, not a stock. But that's okay.

Congrats! Just curious, what is your age range ( or exact if you want to give it)?
Edit: I see 1980 in your profile.

Good luck brotha. To this day I remember my first solicited stock for a client. Made them 48 percent. I was so pumped

I'll bet that white perch fishing is a lot like investing. A little bit of finesse, knowledge, luck, and a whole lot of persistence.
But to answer your question, the Mississippi delta in the bar pits is where the perch are.
And I'm 33

I've bought some stock as a first time investor right before year end. I'm down a bit so far, especially after today.

So far I've lost 9 cents

Trying not to troll, but why just one stock? In order to cover trading costs (free trades don't last forever) how are you going to make any money?

It sounds like this particular ETF is commission free through his broker. I could be wrong, but that's what I assume
Me too. If nothing else these are long term investment and I'll buy them for free while I can.

2 things with ETFs...
1.) this one is basically like a mutual fund. The "stock" you have is just a representation of what it holds.
Top 10 Holdings As of 12/31/2013
Symbol Company Sector YTD Return
(as of 01/13/2014) % of Assets
CBS CBS Corporation Class B Consumer Cyclical -4.39% 5.08%
DIS Walt Disney Co Consumer Cyclical -4.10% 5.05%
DISH DISH Network Corp Communication Services -3.40% 4.99%
TWX Time Warner Inc Consumer Cyclical -6.10% 4.95%
GOOG Google, Inc. Class A Technology +0.20% 4.94%
DTV Directv Communication Services +2.39% 4.88%
DISCA Discovery Communications Inc Class A Consumer Cyclical -9.93% 4.84%
TWC Time Warner Cable Inc Communication Services -2.29% 4.58%
GTN Gray Television, Inc. Consumer Cyclical -13.71% 3.09%
IACI IAC/InterActiveCorp Technology +0.45% 3.06%
-so 45% of your share is a composite of those top ten holdings
2. I've never researched it but the ETFs I have dabbled with seem to go down faster than they go up in relation to the underlying asset.
And for newbies I encourage buying some solid lifetime kinda stocks, preferably with a decent dividend that can be reinvested back into it.

I'm going to buy some XOM, MO, and AEP and set them as drips but I'm mainly focusing all the money I can into paying off med school loans right now. The ETF purchase was just to get more comfortable with the process. There are many ETFs with a much broader portfolio that are more appealing, but PBS was really cheap and commission free so I chose it. Plus it's got great ratings.
