As a 1st round member of the 2011 draft class, the Saints have the option to extend Jordan for a 5th year at an average of the 25 highest players at his position.

What this means is that it is kind of like a mini-franchise tag that must be applied by May 3rd of this year.

His salary would likely be in the $5 million range that season rather than the higher franchise tag hit that would be in the $10+ million category.

I am not saying the Saints will do it, but it's a nice option to have going into this offseason to keep the beast that is Cam Jordan.

Unless a contract extension is signed why would they not unless a gentlemans agreement exist not to go with a 5th year?

It was part of the new collective bargaining agreement to protect teams from 5 year contracts that hold them ransom, but give them flexibility.

The trade-off was that a player likely makes more in his 5th year than his contract would've normally given him.

This is that 5th year option. It pays the player an average salary based on where they are drafted in the 1st round. Since Cam isn't in the top 10, its the average of the 4th-25th highest paid players at his position.

For players taken in the top 10, the fifth-year option equals the transition tender for the player’s position in the fourth year of his contract. (The transition tender is based on the average of the 10 highest-paid players at the position.) For players taken from No. 11 through No. 32, the option arises from the average of the 25 highest-paid players at the position, with the top three excluded.

Seeing as I mentioned JORDAN in the very first line, yes, I am talking about Cam Newton.

Then I repeat his name in the closing line.
