Last year, losing defensive players probably cost LSU a real chance at the NC.

This year, losing offensive players will make a NC next season very difficult if not impossible.

LSU is still getting great talent, but it very rare for a true freshman to contribute at max level until he gets at least a half season or even a full season under his belt.

Not that LSU won't have a good or really good team next season. But it takes more than really good teams to win NC's. I believe the word is great! LSU won't be "great" this fall.

That being said, I believe the Tigers will have another decent season and possibly win another 10 games. That should get LSU a 20 finish. Many schools would kill to have that, but LSU fans including me, hope for and even expect more. We are spoiled!

Am I "off base"?

You're off base, we are pumping out a record number of NFL players. That means we recruit at an elite level and develop players.

Yeah you're offbase for even expecting players to stay at all after they become eligible for the NFL.

This isn't the only place it happens

Les can use that as a selling point. LSU has a crazy amount of people in the NFL.

I don't disagree! I think the issue is timing. Can the young talent play at championship levels in September and October? I don't see it. Look how long it took to settle our defensive backfield this year before they played like champs in the Outback Bowl.

I hope to hell I am wrong!

Happens to Bama, and they still stay relevant!

It seems to happen more here than other places. I could see it if these were high picks but we are losing multiple players who are going extremely late or better yet not getting drafted at all. I agree that this is a good sign that we are getting players to the league but again an unusual number of these players are not going in the first two rounds or even close to that. These players leaving at this clip the past two years is definitely hurting us on the field, hell it has too.

You should become an Alabama fan then. Please. Do it.

It's all Les' fault....but I do agree I wish more stayed longer, but if the current plan of recruiting means we win 80% of time, I will not complain...

This is because of the rookie wage scale the league has now. 1st and 2nd round picks get less money than they used to and 3rd-7th round picks get more money. If a player believes there is even a chance they get drafted it makes sense for them to declare.

We are still extremely relevant and what does this have to do with Alabama?

Thank you RB10 I knew the wage scale was affecting this but I did not realize that it trickled down so much.

I would agree in the sense it should temper expectations for 2014. 2-DT's, and starting Sr LB & safety gone, then all the offensive attrition and even worse if Collins leaves. Other programs are losing early entrants as well, just not as large a number as LSU the last two seasons. Could put the program in a better position for 2015, but ifs and nuts......

Like one and done in basketball I am not much of a fan of the early departures and think it is reducing the overall quality of the sport. The 85 scholly limit has already led to less concentrated talent then you lose the best players too early in a sport that takes multiple years in which to develop adequate mass, strength, and experience for many players to perform at a high level in the upper tier of FBS. If a team has any significant number of injuries to starters in rebuilding mode good luck with that.

So this is two years in a row where a season was over before it even began. Guess this is the new normal. Goodbye championships.

Yes, you are cut off between second & third. This will not kill the LSU football program.

This is nothing new. Have faith and believe in your team. It's only January.

Maybe we should pay them (or pay them more?) like teams from alabama do?

What's the main goal? Send players to the nfl? Or win championships at LSU? I think the nfl angle is way too overplayed by most fans... These guys would still get drafted and probably get drafted higher if they would stay

I guess my point is championships > players in nfl

If all we want to be is an NFL farm team, then I guess this is a good thing. But if we want to build teams that contend for National Championships on a consistent basis, then this is a very disturbing trend. With this as a precedent, you can count on Kwon Alexander, Danielle Hunter, Jalen Mills, Vadal Alexander, Elliot Porter among others to leave after next season. Quality depth is taking a serious hit.
