I have a wedding in a few weeks that is "Black Tie Preferred" but that is mainly because the bride wants the women in gowns. The groom told me not to go out of my way to go in a tux, and said if you don't own one to not go buy one.

I am 29, can easily afford a tuxedo, and have heard it is a good thing to own, but do not see the need for it 99% of the time. Work in finance/corporate bankruptcy, and don't often need one.

Should I buy one for this wedding, or just wear a suit?

Rent one if you want to wear one. If not wear a suit.

Do you ever go to any other black tie events? If so, the tux pays for itself after 2 or three. If not, just wear a nice dark suit.

Do not rent a tux... Either wear a suit or buy a tux.

I would wear the suit and I own a tux

There is your answer, we are in a Krewe and I wear one every year for the ball, so owning makes sense

I have not gone to many, but my brothers wedding and this wedding have both been black tie.

As you said, if I EVER wear it again it is worth it if I was being forced to rent for this. However, I can just wear a gray suit and call it a day

Bought a tux a few years ago for a price not much more than it would cost to rent. Very good purchase. As you get older, if you have to stand in a wedding, people typically let you wear your own tux rather than renting some matching suit.

I own a Tuxedo. You can find some for a decent price online. If you will wear it more than twice, its worth buying.

I wouldn't have wanted a bunch of mismatched tuxes at my wedding, would have driven me nuts.

You're not going to get ideal answers here, a Louisiana message board. Between Mardi Gras balls, Cotillions, Debutant Parties and weddings I've probably worn my tux 40 times - I'm 29 too.

Maybe if you buy one you'll get invited to more black tie affairs.

Why is that? Most of the weddings I have been in they had a specific tux they wanted you to wear. Not like you could just stand up there in any old tux. So even if you owned one you would still have to rent one. I will admit to not knowing much about things of this nature though..

I wear a tux like 3-4 times a year so it was worth the cost to buy one.

Go to Steinmart and buy a Ralph Lauren tux for half the cost

ETA: I'm in college & we wear tuxes to our formals/balls

You should own a tux, but just wear a suit.

If you plan to go to several Black Tie events, then buy a tux. If you don't, just wear a black suit with a black tie or bow-tie.

If you don't have a black suit, buy that instead of a tux.

I bought a basic black tux the last time I needed it.

I may decide to wear it to work one day just for the hell of it.

The Ohio State fan doesn't own a tuxedo, shocking.

OP isn't standing in this wedding.

They are saying not to rent because the groom said OP doesn't have to buy a tux if he doesn't have one, so it would be a waste to rent a tux since he doesn't necessarily have to wear one.

10-4. Not sure why I thought I should chime in a thread about tux's, fashion and whatnot anyway. I'm out.
