Why might you ask? No country dare touch them, no organization dare stand against them, citizen from every country live in fear of them.

They are always a step above the FBI, the CIA, We can't even prosecute or take care of them within our own borders. They can order a strike anywhere at any time.

And in recent news they have gotten into the oil business which we all knows, Oil = power and profit.

The general tone I sense from the Average Americans are that they are afraid of the Mexican cartel if anyone ever say anything negatively publicly about them.

They might not be all over the world yet but they are expanding, hell our prison systems act as just another hub for them to do business.

Have the U.S gotten so weaken that cartels can go toe to toe with them?

Sure the U.S, China, and others control the "big" weapons, however the Mexican Cartels seem to be able to control the people that could press said button with just a little show of force and brutality.

Honest Question, are you afraid of pissing off the U.S gov or the Mexican Cartels more?

The cartels real power is miniscule. The only reason they exist is that they serve a purpose. They'll be crushed overnight if and when their usefulness ends or if the costs outweigh the benefits. A lot of seemingly legitimate people and organizations benefit from the cartels-Both in Mexico and in this country. Not the least of which is government and law enforcement, who need an enemy to justify their draconian measures in the drug war.

I think this question will be answered if they start to exert influence through violence and political pressure over their cut revenue due to legalization of weed.

If we back down in response to their push....the OP might have a point.

The same things were being said about the Colombian cartels in the nineties. Once they got to be more trouble than they were worth and started posing an existential threat to Colombia, they were smashed with a swiftness.

You have it backwards. Their power comes from money, not violence. Sure, they kill a lot of people at the lower levels of society, but they can get away with it only because of who they pay off in the upper levels of society. Drug legalization=less money=less power.

If they start robbing these pot stores, I consider that violence.

They won't. This didn't happen when Prohibition ended. Sure, some pot stores will get robbed by ordinary criminals, because that's where the money is. But there won't be any organized campaign by the cartels Why, because they can't get away with it. Pot stores can go to the cops, unlike illegal drug dealers.

Don't listen to the WOD scaremongering. The Cartels are a bunch of low level thugs, not some all powerful organization of Bond villains.

Let's be honest, you are using too much of their products and then trying to think, not a good mixture.

Tough choice. The US gov can take everything you own and kill you. The Mexican Cartels will peel your face off and sew it to a volleyball.

I think I read somewhere that the Cartel's net worth is now larger than the GDP of the country of Mexico.

That being said, Mexico is as unstable as anything in the middle east if that is the case.

Not a chance...Mexico's GDP is $1.2 - $1.7T.

I think the obvious answer is, no, the Mexican drug cartels are not a superpower.

My Mexican in-laws said that Cartel related crime has diminished significantly in the last year.

You're pretty wrong there.

List of Mexico's 37 most-wanted drug lords
It shows that since the list was published in 2009, 26 of the 37 people listed have been captured or killed.
