The film is based on a fake trailer by Jon Watts that appeared online in October 2010, where it depicted Eli Roth's name, as if he were involved with the project when in fact, at the time he'd never heard of it or its filmmakers. This eventually garnered the attention of Roth, whom liked what he saw and surprisingly agreed to fund a full length feature.
