Very provocative movie.

When I saw the previews for it a while back, I had a strong thought of "Dafuq??" going on. I heard someone talking about it, checked IMDB and it had stellar reviews, so I gave it a shot.

What message did you take from it?

If you notice, there is very little human-human interaction going on in the background (subway, street, sidewalks). Does this tell a tale that technology is ruining our ability to communicate and have interpersonal skills? Theodore (Phoenix) absolutely loses it when Samantha is updating and he can't reach her and I thought about the times we as society get so pissed when our phone doesn't work or our internet is down for a brief period.

I'd love to hear some of your takes from it.

I'm unfortunately going to watch this movie because I think phoenix is a great actor. I'm praying it's not at horrible as I'm sure it is. I'll update when I see it.

I think that it was just as good of a social commentary/prediction as it was a film. Thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few better films this year but none that were as much of a must see as "Her".

There were definitely some scenes where I was just "that's fricking weird" but overall it was pretty good.

It's not. At the very least it will make you concerned where we are going as a society.

But yeah, I really enjoyed this movie, even if it was a bit weird. The film I'd say is a fairly likely future for mankind. Machines will eventually achieve human intelligence and beyond, although I'm not sure about the emotions (and especially orgasms) being produced that quickly.

The film serves as a cautionary tale about our connection with technology. As the OP said, I took particular notice in the film with the human interaction. Unless it was scripted with an established character, then there was none. And I'd say this is accurate for how it will be in the future. It drives people in their mid 30s and older crazy about Generation Y's lack of personal connection in everyday life and too connected to their virtual world of the Internet. It's only going to get worse until people really don't vocally talk to each other at all. Hell, think about Phoenix's job, and that is yet another and larger level of people being less connected and being able to express themselves effectively.

I think this is a film we'll look back on in 20-30 years from now as a film that got it just about on the money. I think Scarlett's OS is a bit too sophisticated for any computer we'll see anytime this century, mostly due to her wit and soul which I highly doubt AI will have at first, but still pretty spot on. For god's sake, people in Japan are already marrying sex dolls, just imagine when they can respond and form an actual opinion.

If you're into the future, then I say check it out. Really good film and one of my favorites this year.

Honestly, walking into this film, I had no idea what was going to happen or who was really in it. I knew that Spike Jonze wrote and directed it, Joaquin Phoenix starred in it, and that Scarlett Johanson starred as a computer program he fell in love with. That was all I knew about the movie walking into the theater. Considering how busy Amy Adams has been this year, I questioned for a brief moment if that was her on screen, and thought for a moment that Rooney was actually the girl who plays Dany in Game of Thrones.

Saw it tonight. I had no idea what it was going in (gf dragged me after Wolf of Wall Street was sold out). It was quite a fascinating experience. Great performance from Phoenix and the direction was superb. I loved the irony when 90% of the theater went straight to their cell phones after the movie ended.

Oh yeah, Phoenix should win for Best Actor this year, but he won't due to the fact that he's pissed off the Academy too much.

I thought the movie was brilliant. The fact that in the world of this film, things had gotten to the point that no one even blinked when Theodore said he was in a relationship with his OS was very troubling to me. Could we really be heading for a society in which this kind of thing could become routine? The implications are frightening and yet not at all far fetched.

Eventually, yeah. I doubt that it would be as socially acceptable that quickly though. Then again, the people we met in this film are pretty weird. We have a guy who works for a company that forges handwritten love cards (yet again another subtle reference on how disconnecting we're becoming) and his socially awkward best friend. The ex is pretty damn terrified and insulted that he's dating his computer. Those are the only major characters who know about it.

I do think it will always be a loser thing to do though, especially since these computer personalities are tailor made specifically for that user. All you would have to do is take an e-Harmony like test, and the computer could easily forge a personality.

I think this is inevitable with technology, and would be shocked if some weirdo hasn't already fallen in love with Siri and wants to marry it.
