so I got hit with a $95 Delta AmEx fee. I dont use this card ever so that smart thing to do is cancel and transfer the credit limit to my AmEx Blue (which I dont really use) to not hurt my credit score correct. Only problem is I now have a $16,000 limit on a card I dont use - what are the consequences of this?

What will they offer for you to upgrade to the platinum?

I would consider upgrading if the bonus was good; keep the card for a year, get the bonus, use the companion ticket and either upgrade again to the reserve or downgrade to the everyday card.

On a similar note, my amex PR gold card auto renews in December. I am trying to weigh my options with how I want to go forward.

This is how I see it:
1)cancel the card, avoid the $195 fee, charge everything to my delta amex going forward
2)haggle with them and try and get a retention bonus (anyone have any luck with this?)
3)Pay the $195 annual fee
4)Upgrade to amex platinum (other than the sky club I don't see a lot of benefit)

I guess I am curious what you all would do.

Check out the FT thread.
AMEX PR Gold offers a solid retention bonus for decent spenders.

I'd establish a Chase Line and always recommend the Freedom for first timers.

Read this. The $150+$25 for authorized user is still likely on the table as well. Just have to secure message them.

You cannot convert cards to other types of cards

can't go from spg to delta or blue cash to platinum

Does that make sense?

It's a Visa or mastercard.

Only comes in Visa these days, even though there are some remnant Mastercard versions of their cards floating about. Visa is the most accepted credit card in the world I do believe. Which is weird, because I don't think I've ever seen Visa accepted and not Mastercard, but I think that happens overseas more than it does here.

Green still has a fee tho, right? I guess I would have to weigh the hit to my credit score vs paying $95 each year. Anyone have specifics on how cancelling a card impacts your overall score? How noticeable is it?

Ya I've seen this thread before, was just wondering if any of you have had luck getting a retention bonus through amex and what your story was.

Depends on how many accounts you have and what your AAoA is. If you currently have two cards and one is 20 years old and the other is one closing the 20 year old account will kill your AAoA. If there is no financial impact it's generally better to have more accounts and just make a small spend and pay it off every once in a while.

Ya, I might have it backwards. Still weird though

I've never run into one or the other personally.
