Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I got a Gold late last year but have been thinking I wanted the Platinum instead for the travel benefits (I weighed the $450 fee to the benefits and figured I'd give it a try). Well, I applied thinking it would instantly replace my Gold. Wrong. Not sure why I thought that, but now I have both.

Any experts out there as to why I should keep both? Or should I ditch one? The Gold is the Premier Rewards Gold if that matters.

I've got that amex premier rewards gold, but I've never really used any of the services. I used my points to get some stuff but really have no clue what the hell else i can use it for. Do you call them and they book stuff for you?? no clue.

I just got my AMEX Gold. It's a $145 charge annually, but I get the first year no fee and %0.0 APR. Pretty pumped about because the points system is awesome, especially if you $5,000 in the first three months. I've got to load that joker up!!! Lol

Did you get the 100,000 points offer with the Platinum?

Its a good card if you do a little traveling. They will even book you concert tickets, dinner reservations, etc.

It's actually almost as good as the Centurion card. I use to have the Centurion, it was a company card, before I switched careers. The only major difference is when you flash the platinum nothing happens, when you flash the black everyone is there to help you.

I have platinum but don't really use any of the benefits since I don't travel much. When my year is up, I just tell them I want to go back to regular card and they waive the fee.

I guess that's one way to look at it. Amex Gold isn't a credit card it's a charge card. Which means you have to pay it off in full each billing cycle. There are stiff penalties if you don't do this.

You must be quite the baller and turning down Centurion offers because I've never heard of them waiving Plat Amex AF.

No, I when I was chatting with them he said he could double the current stated offer of 25,000 pts after I spent $2k in the first three months. So, I got only 50k points with that one.

I got 25,000 pts with my Gold because I basically just bought xmas on it and got the $2k needed easily.

I guess my question wasn't presented clearly. I'm wondering if anyone has both. I can't really see the sense in keeping both except for one thing. The Gold gets me double and triple points on gas and grocery store purchases whereas the Platinum only gives me 1x on those same purchase. BUT, the Platinum gives me great perks when travelling. Maybe my Gold could be my everyday amex and my Platinum could be the one I use when travelling?

I think you got screwed. My offer (and the current one still listed) was/is $2,000 in the first three months. Regardless, $5k isn't that hard to do either. Just put reoccurring bills on there that you would pay anyways. I put insurance, water, electricity, cell phone on there and it adds up fast. Christmas didn't hurt either

It can be worth it if you spend enough in the bonus categories for the gold. If you travel frequently the platinum pays for its self IMHO. I've thought about switching to it several times but like my Delta Card too much

Used to have a gold. Wasn't worth the annual fee.

Same with me, I figured I had to spend at least 15-20k to get enough points in order to re-coupe the yearly fee . Have capital one venture now with $0 fee and same point system as gold card.

Never been offered Centurion but put a lot on the Amex. Would not consider self a baller. If you spend a decent bit and just call them and tell them you want to go back to standard card, they will waive. That's all I can say.

Did you factor in interest that you don't have on AMEX?

I would venture to guess there are not a lot of us that will ever be offered the black one. I'm sure there's a couple around here, but I've heard rumors you need an annual income of over $1MM and significant spending amounts of $250k. Plus the fees are ridiculous at $5,000 just to join the club and then $2,500/yr. That's insane to me.

Well if the yearly fee is $145 you have to spend $14,500 MAX to break even. If you start to include double and triple points realistically you are looking at spending $10,000 to break oven on the annual fee.

I personally think the travel benefits the gold amex offers along with the points makes the card more than worth it.

What does the platinum offer regarding travel benefits that the gold doesnt? They offered me the platinum but I decided I wouldn't make up the $300 difference based on the benefits. May need to rethink that.

To the OP, I think you would be hard pressed to break even on both of the cards in a given year just based on the rewards/annual fees. Granted a lot of the benefits are hard to put a $ amount to.

I cannot speak from experience. I just know what people write on Flyertalk and they are generally offered points or off the annual fee that equates to about half of the AF. and those folks say are spending about 100k a year. If you are getting the fee waived you have a sweet thing going and keep doing whatever you are doing right.

But it basically gives you "status" at most, hotels, car rentals, and airlines. If you travel enough you would pay that without blinking an eye (making that kind of money).

Also FYI... Any active Military do not have to pay annual fees for credit cards
