I want to enter the competition. But i am not officially a member of any club, other than being a facebook member of brasseur.
Do I need to officially be a member to participate?
This is the competition i am referring to.

You are going to be welcome to enter (I assume), LSUGRAD can come to the rescue on that information.
However, if for some reason you have to put down a club name, you are welcome to use ours as we have no official membership list. I reserve the right to not claim you if you beer sucks

Same here. I've threatened to go to a meeting going on 2 years now.

Hey guys, all Louisiana homebrewers are welcome to enter...
We encountered several situations where Louisiana based clubs had members who live in other states so we've also allowed homebrewers who are members of Louisiana clubs, but do not live in Louisiana to enter.
If all goes well next year we hope to open the competition up to all homebrewers.

Or they could go the Brewing Network route and put down 'Tiger Droppings Homebrewers' or 'FBD Homebrewers'

I don't see why TD can't have our own homebrew club.

So i just registered, i have a couple questions.
1) So i see the above styles admitted. What are the style guidelines? BJCP? If so, must i meet the vital statistics in order to submit my brew?
For example the vital statistics are:
OG: 1.048 - 1.065 (Mine was 1.082)
FG: 1.010 - 1.018 (Mine was 1.024)
IBU: 25-40 (Mine was 41)
SRM: 22-40 (Mine was 42.5)
ABV: 4.2 - 5.9 (Mine was 7.48%)
Am i not qualified to enter into that category? If not, what category would i fit in with my oatmeal stout?
2) I am brewing a saison this weekend. It might be ready in time for the competition. I'd like to submit it. Will Saison style be added to the competition?
quote:
4A Dark American Lager 4B Munich Dunkel 4C Schwarzbier
10A American Pale Ale 10B American Amber Ale 10C American Brown Ale
11A Mild 11B Southern English Brown Ale 11C Northern English Brown Ale
13A Dry Stout 13B Sweet Stout 13C Oatmeal Stout
13D Foreign Extra Stout 13E American Stout 13F Imperial Stout
14A English IPA 14B American IPA 14C Imperial IPA
18A Belgian Blond Ale 18B Belgian Dubbel 18C Belgian Tripel
18D Belgian Golden Strong Ale 18E Belgian Dark Strong Ale

The judges will be using the BJCP guidelines for judging...
They are guidelines and not restrictions so you shouldn't feel like you can't enter a competition bc your beer falls outside of BJCP recommendations.
When we originally chose the categories we avoided categories 16, 17, and 23 because one of locations we originally discussed judging was Tin Roof. Some places are a little more paranoid than others about wild yeast so we tried to choose styles that people wouldn't be using brett or other bacteria.
No other categories will be added this year, but I will actively lobby for category 16 next year. we can call it the 'Bottomland Brewing Category'.

I suggest specifying between "wild yeast" and standard yeast. I, personally, do not use any wild yeast in my saison, mainly because i despise sours. Still can't acquire the taste for one.

Since those are BJCP categories, I think a good assumption would be they are judging to the style guidelines. You're fine in the Oatmeal Stout category. Your bitterness, sweetness, and abv are a little out of style. Oatmeal stouts are already a little sweet, though not cloyingly sweet, so you're kind of threading a needle balancing your ABV with sweetness. You'll get dinged a little if it's too boozy or too cloying, but not as much as you would for other off-flavors.
Major off-flavors are where your score will suffer. If you have a really good beer that's slightly out of guidelines, you can usually still score upper 30s and move on to other rounds. Any out of style off flavors like astringency, metal, oxygenation, etc will be the things to really hurt you. Bascially anything on the left side of the score sheet that doesn't belong in your beer will hurt you.

16C guidelines pretty much cover Sacch strains vs. other strains.

I don't think we will have anything to enter this year... brewing has been on a hiatus preparing to move. Oh well... maybe I can judge instead.

Just got the email for the competition entries.
Question: I have a big event planned at my house for that day. How long does an event like that last? I know it says it starts at 10:00 am, but what all does it entail. I'm wondering if i'd be able to drop by at 10, and then stay for an hour and come back. Just wondering if the results will be announced by then.
