So we maintain dual residences. One in Dallas and one in Katy(Houston Tx) and we go back and forth every few months. Our neighborhood is run by some water/mud management company. In actuality they changed water management companies a few months back.

So we show up at our home in Katy yesterday and the water is turned off. I was like...wtf..I know I paid the bill. Anyways we call and what we are told completely shocked me.

The rep explained that we were paid up but told me that they turn the service off if they do not see activity on the meter after a certain period. He said it was to "conserve water". To get it reconnected they would have to dispatch a tech and there was a reconnection fee and it would take up to 72 business day hours to get the service reconnected

I was like.....wtf. I said you're telling me is that in order to come back and live in my OWN home with working services I ahve to call you to get my water reconnected and pay for that luxury? He said yes and basically told me tough luck.

Has anyone heard of this before? Seems like a scam.

Never heard of that. They shouldn't need to come out either.

That is a scam, whether it's a legal one or not I don't know.

If they have to come out there, that means you can turn it back on yourself.

This makes no sense. If you are not using the water then you are not a person that needs to be targeted to conserve it.

The garbage in my area is picked up by a private contractor. When I was gone on an extended vacation, they took my big green trash can and I couldn't get it back-"we don't have any available right now." WTF? What about the one you just took from my house? They never did bring one back. I take my trash to the landfill every couple of weeks now. At least they dropped the monthly charge from my utility bill.

To the OP, were you paying a monthly bill while the water was disconnected? At the very least you should get a refund on that.

This should be a lesson that private business is not necessarily more efficient or responsive to the consumer than government.

I probably wouldn't get it, but I would want my money back for services that I paid for but did not receive.

It is what it is. I just hate being scammed by what looks like a "legit" business.

Instead of complaining about it on the internet, why don't you just go turn the valve back on yourself?

It shouldn't be up to them to determine that.
