My mom has had the same router and modem for like 8 years and it is miserable so I am going to get her a new one. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a new one, preferably all in one. Also, do they ever give free upgrades? Thanks in advance!

Ok....any ideas on which to buy if I am going to get a router and a modem separately? She only pays for the like 5mbps a month if that makes a difference.

All in one's are awful awful awful.

In her case, idk, I guess just go buy one at best buy or something I don't know much about the POS's.

Yes, avoid all in one's at all costs.

Oh and they are awful.

Sorry for mentioning the all-in-ones, I will never do it again even though I get 50mps DL speed with mine thru century link.

Back on topic....does anyone want to give me any advice on which modem and router she should get?

480 i've been investigating gateway/routers/modems. i've been told by a bunch of pencil necked computer geeks that an "all in one" is not the way to go.

This is true..HOWEVER..OP says this is for his mother..I'm guessing that shelling out $200 for separate appliances is not what he wants to do..

you are obviously new here? the OP usually wouldn't stop to pick up 2 one hundred dollar bills off the sidewalk as $200.00 for 5 minutes work isn't worth his time.

Motorola Docsis 3.0 modem - whatever the current model is.

I've had good luck with Linksys routers - if they're not your bag, the Asus Black Diamond series is good - you need to make sure you pay for what you want/is important and don't pay for what you don't want or need. The main differences with consumer routers these days are the type and number of bands, as well as the USB ports and standards.

Anything that is DOCSIS 3.0 for the modem.
Check out the Asus 66n (not ac). Should over-suit her needs for the next 6-8 years.

If that's too expensive, Bufallo makes very good N and AC (again, really not needed by her, most likely from the info you have given) that are on par with performance at less than the cost of most competitors (asus, Linksys/Cisco (now Belkin- owned, but the EA4500 and up routers. I did lose my 'internet' port on it after 13 months and they wouldn't offer replacement or help, aside from that, they make good products)

Between those 3 brands + wireless N or AC, search tigerdirect and amazon for the cheapest, and you/she win.

What I posted was the best router and modem for Cox Internet. Well, close to it. I may have misread the title though.

It was the best "separate" suggestion
