I mentioned this in another thread but didn't get any responses. What benefit would the saints cap get from letting these guys walk? They are easily replaceable as seen this year and are our oldest players on defense. We could use the space to resign Jimmy or pick up another corner, WR, OL, etc.

Walk? They're holding on for dear life. I think Harper would be the only one who could find work elsewhere.

Not my point. Cut them whatever, you know what I meant. I just want to know how much cap space it would free up.

Vilma's contract is done. He likely is as a player too. No cap gain or hit involved

Smith is a given. He'll still take up $2.3mil of cap to cut but will save a whopping $11.5mil net

Harper is this- $5.9mil to keep as is. $3.7mil of cap to cut but still saves a net $2.2mil. Option 3 is a new deal that would pay him less than the $3.7mil it will cost to let him walk.

I think Vilma and Smith do what's right and retire in the offseason.

Interesting on Harper. Maybe we can negotiate something under that 3.7 number but I see him trying to test the market. He's older but only 8 years in the league. I could see a team with room signing him to a 4 year 16 million type deal.

Also, any chance Drew restructures a la Tom Brady did last year? Not pay him less but swap some things around for lack of a better way to put it.

At age 31+ and with quite a rep for his coverage woes it would surprise me- but stranger has occurred. He'll prolly look for more than a one year deal somewhere where the outlook for reps is better- if I was guessing. As much as he gets ragged, he still is maybe average in total by his good play in the box.
