Natural Born Killers vs. True Romance

When both films came out (early 90s)
I thought NBK was better. Woody and Juliet Lewis "carried" their movie better than Christian and Patricia did imo. Not to mention having Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr. giving hilarious performances.
Then over the past few years I thought True Romance was better.
The supporting cast is just so strong and the directing was more by the book. Where as Oliver Stone's tricky camera work doesnt have the wow factor it once did for me.
I still think they are both great in their own way. Both are from Tarantino scripts. I know he hates NBK, but man was Woody great in this movie.

True Romance is the better movie. its my favorite movie of all time. I saw it at the theater about 12 times when it first came out.
Just love everything about that movie. and I can't stand Slater in anything else.

True Romance was a GREAT movie. And, I don't always like movies like that. But, when I saw it I could not believe how perfect it was.
Great supporting cast: Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, James Gandofino and directed by Tony Scott.
Are you kidding me? I cannot believe that cast, now that I think about it.

I couldn't disagree more. Tony Scott was spot on with True Romance.
The problem with NBK is that Stone appears to have taken the material more seriously than the cast - and that showed on the screen. I don't care for the bulk of Stone's stuff - outside of Platoon and Wall Street (and I guess JFK as a guilty pleasure).
There are 7 or 8 Tony Scott films that I really enjoy (and his brother is my favorite director).

I think that True Romance is head and shoulders above Natural Born Killers. True Romance is clever and subtle. Lots of cool and sleek parts going on in the background. NBK is just blunt and crude. Everything about it from the camera work to the roles are just over the top and cartoonish. I guess it's good for being a bit of a roller coaster. It just comes across as being shocking for the sake of being shocking.

That's honestly all I took away from it at the time. True Romance has a bunch of different levels. How a movie can be filled with that much violence, and yet border on being both a drama and romantic comedy - all the while containing a scene where a 120 pound girl defeats Tony Soprano, the Sicilian scene - as well as Brad Pitt's "Floyd" (his finest character to date, IMHO) - and Oldman's "Drexyl" (sheer acting genius) - when you break True Romance down into the component parts - it just gets more and more awesome.
And I agree with this being the one we'll remember Slater for (at least positively) - more kudos for the late, great Tony Scott - Slater can barely act, yet Tony got his best performane out of him - and by a significant margin.
I haven't seen everything she's done, but Arquette has been "meh" ever since (didn't watch Medium - she gets rave reviews for that - and haven't seen her in Boardwalk Empire yet.)

I think the performances by Bronson Pinchot and Saul Rubineck in True Romance really carry the last 1/3 of the movie. they were both absolutely incredible.

True Romance was way better in my opinion. NBK is overrated, not saying bad, just overrated.....mostly just because of the stir created by the gratuitous violence in it when it was released.

I don't disagree. When a movie is this good, top to bottom, I think the director deserves extra praise. I think this is Tony Scott's finest film.

NBK was interesting when it was a road movie, when they went into the prison it became a terrible mess.
The sum is a pile of garbage that resembles the output of actors, writers and a director that were completely coked out.
True Romance has very distinct layers to it and it is very well put together. Tarantino writing his love of old movies into the Slater character was pretty self serving and unnecessary but that is my only gripe with the movie.

Gary Oldman as Drexl is one of my all-time favorite movie antagonists. I wish it would have worked where he had even more of a role. Oldmans transformation was awesome work.
