Obama: Extending Unemployment Benefits “Creates New Jobs”

President Barack Obama lauded the Senate’s advancement of a bill to extend jobless aid on Tuesday as a “very important step” and called on Republicans in both chambers to back the legislation “without obstruction or delay.”
“Voting for unemployment insurance helps people and creates jobs and voting against it does not,” Obama said in remarks at the White House.
“We have got to get this across the finish line without obstruction or delay and we need the House of Representatives to be able to vote for it as well,” he said. “That’s the bottom line.”

He is so brilliant. What would we do without him? People voted for him twice to hear him say this.

It's a legit way to point out inconsistency in those who come up with multiplier effects to justify wealth redistribution programs that they support.
When IB Freeman makes a valid criticism the response is always "yeah but economic impact is positive once you factor in multipliers and therefore it must be good".
So, every dollar you spend on unemployment benefits goes to people who buy goods and services from people. Then those people buy things and so on.
Technically, the film tax credits include broken windows.

yes it does...but this is because it's not a credit in the sense of just lowering tax burden. just so we're all clear
the "refund" mechanism + the transferability make it something else than just a pure credit

You cannot argue that gov't stimulus such as UE benefits creates economic growth. The problem is....
a) is it sustainable - can we continue to do this forever? I think the answer to that (and keynes would agree) is NO. I don't know if we are past that point or not but we are close to it if we have not passed it.
b) Do you get the bang for the buck? What is multiplier of providing UE benefits? For $1 spent, do you get $1 of increased GDP? Or less? Or more? Probably for UE, you get something over 1 but for lots of gov't spending you get less than a dollar.

Imagine a world where a President would be able to claim 5 years into his terms that unemployment benefits should be extended for the 19th time and still pretend he's done a good job.
Bizarro world.
Bizarro world.

In that case, let's put everyone on unemployment and create an economic boom!

So let me get this straight.
Take money from the people who work. Give that money to people who don't work. Let those people who don't work spend that money that was given to them by the people who work, and........voila!! Jobs for everyone!
Brilliant!
