Any have one? I know they used to be more popular. Is it an option realistically?

A lot of fork lifts still run off that system.

We had one in the 80's. I was young but remember it was very fuel efficient but lacked power. Our truck could switch from gas to propane on the go. Plus you can boil crawfish anytime you want if your truck is present

And you can "air" up your tires if you have the right hose with you.

I'd do a compressed natural gas conversion before propane. National retail gas stations are beginning to add CNG refueling stations to their existing locations, plus CNG is cheaper.

Don't know about propane, but I have mine converted to run on veggie oil.

Does it really smell like french fries?

Not really French fries, but it is a distinct smell. I put about $3k in to install it, and figured I have saved about $8-10k since then. Really only good for long trips, since I still have to start/stop on diesel.
