To OT frequent fliers:

Show up to Salt Lake airport today to fly back to Nola. Thought something was fishy as I did not receive a check in email though I still had confirmation email from flight there but of course couldn't get in touch with anyone. So go to check in and attendant looks up and tells me....

"You aren't on this flight. Someone in Nola (missed my flight to Salt Lake and got on one an hour layer.. No big deal) didn't reserve your return flight bc the original flight was missed. Because of the Chicago freeze, the earliest flight of any airline we can get you on is Wed night."

They comp'd me hotel for two nights, $21 in airport voucher food, and a $75 voucher for future flight.

A. What do you think would be a fair comp? I was thinking like $500 or $1,000 for them screwing up. I lol'ed when she handed me the $75. I'm not 6 yrs old.

B. I'm first on standby for a direct flight to Nola tonight. Is there a decent chance?

TIA

LOLZ

You missed your outbound flight, and they have the right to cancel your entire trip. You're lucky they are flying you back.

When you missed your outbound flight, did you book a new flight all-together, or did they just charge you a fee, etc. for the next flight?

In Nola they said no problem there's an identical flight in an hour. We'll get you on that. But apparently their computers just wipe out your return itinerary unless the attendant reserves your seats.

What airline?

Sounds like you got a nice ticketing agent who was trying to help you out and didn't re ticket the entire thing.

You miss any flight in your itinerary, due to no fault of the airline, they have the ability to cancel the remainder of your itinerary.

Yeah, that dumbass airline, it's all their fault. They owe you an international flight in first class.

Sort of.

Likely what happened was you missed your flight, but getting on the one an hour later still allowed you to make your connection so the Ticketing Agent just rebooked your MSY-XXX flight. Then the system canceled out your remaining flights because you missed your initial outbound.

IMO, you should have taken the responsibility to read your contract of carriage and ensure with the agent at MSY that you were being reticketed for ALL flights.

This should also serve as a reminder that you should always check in T-24 and if there are issues then, to contact the airline.

UA also does not have direct flights from SLC-MSY.

You are at their mercy. You will take that $75 and like it. I seriously doubt you get anything else.

A couple years ago I was flying first class to Seattle. My first flight out of NOLA was cancelled due to mechanical issues. To get me to my destination that day, they reticketed my flights and all of them were in coach (no first class available). The whole thing was a mess. No refund, voucher, apology, nothing and that was after riding serious arse.

This was also the time that United and Continental were merging and neither wanted to take responsibility or it was just easier for them to say it was the other carrier’s fault.

You probably could have ridden more than arse and gotten the first class seat.

Did you pay for first class? If so you are entitled to a refund of the price difference between your fare and the coach fare.

Exactly. Learned the hard way how airlines work. Should have known when check in didn't work.

Hopefully this direct Delta standby works out. A United attendant did think I will get comp'd more bc of a 2 day layover.

Yeah, I did. I don't know how many people I contacted, emailed, sat on the phone with and never got anywhere with it. It was booked well in advance and they tried to say that the current coach fare the day of was actually more than what the first class fare was when I booked it or some horseshite.

It's water under the bridge now, just thinking about it gets me riled up.
