regarding LC/GW, how do kids respond to parents that are overly controlling?

-by rebelling, plain and simple. Plenty of kids commit to schools other than their parents first choice, but how often do you actually hear anything about it, much less the parent(s) going off about it during an interview?? The reality is, if kids, especially males, have a less than warm and fuzzy relationship with their parents, they tend to want to do the exact opposite of whatever their parents tell them do.
shite, I had a terrible relationship with my mother - strict catholic (mainly for the sake of appearances really), manipulative, passive aggressive type, and I had stellar academic records in high school. Got in to rice out of high school and they offered to pay my whole way. That's around $45,000 a year and a great job waiting for you when you get out.
I went to community college so I wouldn't have to try and could smoke weed and party all week just to spite them.
In hindsight, obviously a moronic and totally life altering decision, but such is the thinking of 17 - 18 year old kids, so stop trying to understand it and quit letting it bother you.

Well, at least your history shows your advice is usually spot on.

quit trying to justify your regrets and label your mom as controlling. What she did was raise you correctly with real parenting and you shite ON HER FACE and embarrassed her making her question what she did wrong! and for that, you are the biggest dick hateful punk I've ever seen.
Colleges work hard to put kids in position for success, just like your parents did, and some kids refuse to think their parents actually are smarter and know more than them.
GW made a bad decision. He had an offer from a great program and stay near his mother, like she asked. He will accomplish nothing more there than if he were to honor his mother. IMO

So they went OOS to disrespect their mother?

quote:lots of kids parents like their in state school. Approximately zero kids parents have bashed their sons decision on national television. Also, I can recall zero families in which two brothers went on national tv to openly choose the exact opposite of their mom's wishes, laughing and smiling about while they do it. Did you see any kind of sheepishness on the look of their faces?

there's a difference between disrespect and rebelliousness.
