This is an awful decision. I know the rookie cap doesn't give much money between 2-7 but I don't even see him on mock draft boards. He'll probably go undrafted...

Still struggling with the obvious

Yes but since you have the answer lets hear it. LSU players are not the only ones who come from poor backgrounds, they're not the only ones who dream of the NFL. But thy are the only ones leaving in droves. So what is the obvious reason?

was our best o-lineman last season. Powerfully built and very strong run blocker. Better pro prospect than Collins IMO. Lael is the one that needs to come back. Needs another year in the weight room and another year developing into a top flight LT.

They aren't just now LSU has reached a talent level where many so declare early and because of the NFl draft changes you want to enter as soon as possible. If you have anywhere from a 2-6 draft grade you go really now because the only decent guaranteed money is the Top 10. After that is all becomes relative and many of these guys know they won't jump from a 5th or 6th round grade to a top 10 by staying one year.

Then why does Bama seemingly keep players like CJ Mosley on campus an extra year when he already had a 1st-round grade? We should just advertise our school as 3 and done.

Every player is different, same reasons players such as Matt Leinart, Ciron Black, Taylor Newan (sp? Michigan OT) all decide to come back. Some kids just enjoy college and will make the choice to stay and extra year while other will jump because they want to get paid. It isn't like LSU hasn't benefitted as Dorsey came back for his senior year when he could have gone and still been a Top 10 pick.

I don't know that Loston and Barrow were really leaders but I see your point. Mett absolutely was.

Mett a leader in 2012 and Barrow, Loston weren't . Stop with the silly shite.

I'd be really surprised if Trai actually left. Porter will be a senior and Rasco hasn't declared so that's another senior. Not all the guys are jumping ship.

The single highest total of underclassman declared last year and the number will be higher this year. What part of that can you old farts not understand? This isn't an lsU problem. You just know all the LSU guys that are leaving. Every school is going through this.

I hear people throw this around a good bit but I just do not agree.

Every pick gets paid less than the pick before him. These differences might not seem like much, when strictly considering the 4-year cash value of the contract, but that ignores important considerations, specifically guaranteed money. For instance, the first pick of the 3rd round is guaranteed at around $700k, while the last pick is guaranteed around $500k- nearly a 30% decrease. Compare that to the last pick of the 4th round at $300k, roughly 60% and 40% decreases for the picks in the same position of the previous rounds. That is a significant amount of money. Also note that from the 4th round on, the base salary remains static at the minimum for rookies ($420k in 2014).

The primary reason the signing bonus is important is obvious, its guaranteed. Moreover, in terms of salary cap, a signing bonus will be prorated over the life of the contract, unless a player is released, in which case the unrecognized portion of the salary will hit the cap that year. As such, the higher the signing bonus, the more difficult it will be for the team to choose to release you as it will be a larger stress on the cap. In other words, the higher your signing bonus, the more likely you are to receive more of your original contract.

I don't expect a 21 year old kid with life long dreams of playing in the NFL to understand or care about the difference between 200k and 300k over 4 years. I would just hope there is someone available truly guiding them and explaining this rationale before declaring early and foregoing a free college degree.

tl;dr: I think there is value in moving up in the draft, whether it be one round or three. However, I don't expect an athlete too see it the same way I do.

Same link

The main thing is getting that second contract, by staying an extra year you delay getting that contract and risk an injury. The loss of say 250k in signing bonus is easily made up if you reach certain escalators, things in contract, and reach that second deal.

We are no longer talking about these kids losing 10's of millions by leaving early vs staying to improve stock but hundreds of thousands.

Makes no sense as a RG. He isn't a highly valued position to be leaving early.

These make the most sense. He may feel he will never get a good grade at rg. But to me, he's always seemed like a smart guy, get ur degree son. Either way you prob won't be getting paid playing gaurd, and could easily be done in a couple of years with nothing to fall back on.

Even if he stayed his stock wouldn't rise that much, but I feel his stock will never be high. Hence finishing school while it is free.

I guess I don't see LSU now as being much more talented than in the past 12 years or that much more talented than Bama, UGA, etc.

2013 LSU 11
Alabama 3
Georgia 3

2012 LSU 3
Alabama 3
Georgia 1

2011 LSU 2
Alabama 3
Georgia 2

2010 LSU 1
Alabama 2
Georgia 2
Florida 5

So looks like Alabama/UGA are losing them at a similar pace and last year is an outlier until we see how this year shapes up. All I did for the information was search "NFL underclassman 2012, etc"

Well 11 left from LSU last year, and the closest to that was 4 for any other SEC school. But I'm sure its just because LSU is that much more talented than everyone.

I'm not arguing that, but this argument used to be if a guy is going to leave early to get picked in the second round, when he could stay to improve to a first round pick, and see $10M more dollars. We are now talking about marginal players that are mid round to UFA.

Another point that seems to be being missed is that these new contracts also create cheaper labor. If you are a guy hanging on for 4 years making rookie minimum, why the hell would a team give you a second contract when they can just bring in a rookie and replace you. Truly a double edged sword.

Because if you are good enough to stick in the NFL for 4 years then you are going to line up a second contract. If you are not these new contracts allow a team to cut you rather easily.
