Talk to me about homesteading...

Any homesteaders out there? We're looking at 10acres. Thinking chickens, raised beds (to begin with), bees, composting (including a composting toilet), rain barrels, alternative energy, etc. Needing advice on beginning and advanced stages, self-sustaining property, whatever you can think of!

Apparently you build a 600 sq. ft. man cave with two big flat screen tvs. Then you are a homesteader.

My wife would never agree to such a thing but I wouldn't mind

I've never looked into it, but I would have to assume that step 1 is have a ton of money in the bank.

Word.
I want 100 acres adjoining a national forest. Pond, Holstein cow, 3 angus cows and a bull, chickens, garden, fruit trees, still, etc

I'm trying to find the "homesteader" thread from a couple of days ago. Dude was talking city run water and electric. Had a loft and two flat screens. You know....living off the land.

How old are you? Is your marriage strong? In theory, it sounds like a great life. But in reality, it's a lot of struggle and work... neither of which is a bad thing, but it does take a special breed of people.
Would you keep working a regular job?

Was that the log cabin where he said he was living off the grid, but the photos showed power running to the home?

I don't think the word homesteader was used

The one I am thinking of was 6+ months ago and might have been in Alabama.

Lots of forums that deal with this stuff. Some may apply to your area, some may not

I've got a pretty big interest in this stuff. I have friends who basically "homestead" on some of the islands around here.

My mom does all of these things, never considered her a homesteader though.

What are the squatting laws up there? I imagine pretty fricking lax.

I'm 25, she's 28 (3 kids 5, 4, 2). It's been her dream long before mine. I just like being out in the woods. She wants the self-sustaining lifestyle.
I would keep my job, especially at first, which may require being gone a lot. She stays home with the kids and homeschools already though.

Yeah, if you can find a cabin you can usually stay, but this applies mainly to the interior of the state where there are lots of traplines.
Around here, good luck. You have to buy land (which is expensive) and find a way to get "stuff" around.
Former co worker bought land in St. James Bay, barged up what she needed and carried it 5 miles across the bay by skiff. Hundreds of trips. She even built a wood fired hot tub.
