What are your thoughts on NYC mayor de blasio's pre-k initiative?

He wants to raise taxes on 500k or more earners by less than a percent in order to greatly expand access to pre-k services in the city. He wants a universal system of pre school.

frick that. Babysitters for NYC! The "less than a percent" bit makes me think you support this.

NYC will get what they deserve though. Head Start is a failure, so they can try it out with this guy! I hope the businesses and rich people end up in one of the cities that I do business in.

What's the problem with 'access' right now?

Probably paying teachers' unions

So, his little "less than 1%" should raise somewhere in the neighborhood of what? $1 billion sounds about right.

They are doing this to get federal funds...so it's not just a tax on the people of New York.

I'm still shocked that this initiative failed in Memphis. That city has never seen a tax it didn't like.

De Blasio doesn't know math. I lived in manhattan with two kids up until October 1 of this year. The least expensive pre-k program my wife and I could find was $18k a year and the teachers didn't make much: it was all in real estate and insurance. I just don't see how he can do it without putting the city in bad financial condition.

Pre-K has no effect on the eventual academic achievement gap between the classes. You cannot fix IQ.

This is just a blatant exercise in buying off the teacher's unions by increasing their membership's work opportunities. Nothing more, nothing less.

Same thing. Lower IQ people tend to have worse parenting skills. But regardless no amount of parenting skills can create what nature hasn't given. You can only enhance.

Most poor folks have access to heavily subsidized day care.

You're not suggesting IQ is genetically linked, are you?

Probably true. For practical purposes, it's a gimme to a certain profession and a symbolic gesture to gullible voters.

Oh no, I would never suggest anything like that. I believe in Tabula Rasa when a child is born. If the mom has an IQ of 45 and the dad has an IQ of 52 there is a chance that the child will have an IQ of 140. And if it were not for poor parenting skills of the retarded parents, their genius child could become a brain surgeon.
