There;s a little wilderness town called Talkeetna just outside Denali off the Parks Highway. It's an awesome little town with a cat for a mayor, and the show "Northern Exposure" was modeled after.

They have a bachelor auction every winter (raised 23k for charity this year) and during the ball they have a wilderness woman contest.

quote:

Legend has it there's nothing tougher than an Alaska woman, and one competition sets out to prove exactly who’s the toughest.

Each year, a hardy group of women gathers in Talkeetna -- the small, quirky community of 900 people nestled in the northern Matanuska Valley -- for the annual Wilderness Woman Competition.

The challenges test a variety of “skills” any good Alaska woman should have, from hauling water and chopping wood to “shooting” a moose and making a sandwich for a man lounging in a recliner.

The event is all part of the craziest weekend of the year in Talkeetna, when each December women from all over the state flock for a chance to get their hands on a real Alaska mountain man at the Talkeetna Bachelor Auction. The auction raises funds for women in crisis in Talkeetna. This year, the auction raised $23,000, selling off dates with 40 of Talkeetna’s most eligible bachelors.

If you ever get a chance to come to Ak, Talkeetna is a must. The first time I went, there were two ladies bathing nude in the river. Some of the weirdest folks I've ever met, but some real outdoorsmen who live there. IT's a meeting place for the off the grid types, and mountain climbers.

They used to have a mountain man contest which my ex S/O got me to enter after a few brewskies. I actually did quite well and held my own with the exception my sled dog decided to lay down and rest after I got the harness on, and I had to carry the dog to the next point. If you pick the wrong dog...

Great little town, has awesome views of Denali from the river.

Passed by there a few times on the way to Denali and Fairbanks, but we never stopped off the highway. Maybe I'll get that chance with a return trip to Alaska in the future. I have some unfinished fishing business to take care of.

That's not too far from Soldotna. If I ever get a chance to visit my cousin up there, I'll have to check it out.

This sounds like a fun thing to do and then it would bring you back to do it again! Cheers to the townspeople for having a great attitude and having the desire to put it out there for others to enjoy.

Talkeetna is on a spur road, but the Ak. Railroad stops there. Even by Ak. standards it's a very unique small town.

Here's a vid of the Bachelor auction

Town full of trappers, miners, mountain climbers, folk musicians. Definitely one of the fewonly places still left like it. The rail stop has made it tourist mess in summer though

Also, some great fishing in the area and it's the "jumping off point" for Mt. McKinley.

Just told mrs house about this.

She gave me the "someone's about to get slapped in the face" look.

Don't need me a mountain woman. I have a Gump.

Hands full here.

Had an ex that lived in Talkeetna for about 10 years. I just e-mailed her asking if she did it. Mentioned it didn't include landing or taking off in a plane which she had problems with a few times.

We (some associates and I) used to provide entertainment for some of the locals around Talkeetna and Trapper Creek. We brought in strippers and a DJ once a month during the winter for the locals and the girls made more money that night than they would any night in Anchorage. The crowd was awesome, it was old trappers and their wives, bush rats, Talkeetna folk.

Roger, heard back from her. Seems she did it at least once, said the hip wader boots they made her wear were too big.
You probably had occasion to meet her, she'd be in the middle of everything.

Depends on when she was there. My ex S/O's mother lived there for a bit, we used to go there fairly often.

The Moose Dropping Festival was always fun

I'm guessing from 2000 to maybe 2010 or so. Must like the cold, she's in CO. now.
