I have heard several times that Brandon Taylor was the key to why the 2011 defense was so strong. As everyone knows, Taylor started out as a CB but was moved to safety. His cover skills and recognition of offenses allowed Tyrann to be able to freelance. See how AJ performs is the number one thing I will be watching on game day. The number two thing will be if Mills gets the nod at safety.

1. That gives a better cover guy at that position.
2. It allows that beast (#21) to get more playing time.
3. Mills would probably be an upgrade in run support as well. That kid really brings the wood when he tackles.

We lose Loston, but if Mills is the answer at safety, we will be in good shape at 3 out of the 4 secondary positions next year.

I'd call Tyrann and Brockers keys to the 2011 D before Taylor, no disrespect to BT. Hell, there were a number of keys to that D. Anyway, a lot of us feel that Mills could be another Taylor type, and having a 'cover' safety really helps Chavis' D, since the safeties have to play man more than most schemes when we go to 5+ DBs.

Taylor was pretty damn key as well man. Without him, Mathieu probably plays a more typical CB role

I'm just repeated what I heard from interviews and articles about 2011. Of Course, the Honey Badger, Mingo, Brockers and Claiborne were superstars. Not to mention Minter, Reid and Montgomery. Taylor was responsible for getting everyone in the right position and making adjustments on the fly.

I'm not saying Mills will be able to do all of that. Wishful thinking. I'm hoping that he could be the key to resolving what has ailed our secondary all season.

Tyrann could do what he did because he had Taylor over the top of him.

Taylor was a RB out of HS btw

I don't think mills compares to taylor

None of our corners can tackle like Taylor. He was great in the box and over the top. Seemed like he and Mathieu were involved in every play. He was the best unmentioned player we had in 2011.

BT was a very underrated safety and didn't get the recognition he deserved. He was a tackling machine

Mills is a very good tackler. I'm not saying that he is just as good as Taylor. I'm hoping that he will develop into the same level of player.

I would love if this would happen. I think people really don't appreciate what Brandon Taylor brought to our defense.

Mills wants to be a CB not a safety.

to bad for him because he doesn't have real good CB skills. Now that people have been mentioning it, it does seem he would be a better fit at safety..

Mills is the most underrated Tiger in years. He and Taylor are very comparable imo, although their skillsets are safety (Taylor) and corner (Mills). Jalen Mills is a hell of a player, and we're lucky to have him for one more year. I'll bet any takers that Mills is a three and done guy with a nice landing in the NFL. Fortunately we have a murderers row of corners behind him.

Played both ways actually... he and his bro Jhyryn (who was also a stud in HS).

Underrated??? Do you watch the games? He was next to horrible all season this year. He was burnt constantly and seems to not possess the needed skills to play corner. He may make a good safety though.

The most impressive player on defense this year didn't start. Robinson locked down Texas A&M big play Wr like no one else did this year. The few catches he did get on Robinson were due to him pushing off. No one else really impressed. Ego had a couple of dominate games but that was it.

I agree with you and that is what made Mill's performance that much worse. He looked absolutely lost out there at times and the knock on 21 was his inexperience, so that was the excuse for the Jalens to start the season.

no they are not. Mills may be under rated by the fan base but he is not on the level of player that Taylor was by a long shot.
