figured I would compare these two cats since they both have movies coming out right about now and are pretty much the same age (39 years old and about two weeks apart). they both grew up in the industry and also have the same three types of Oscar nominations as well (2 Lead, 1 Supporting) -

Joaquin Phoenix

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Gladiator (2000)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - Walk the Line (2005)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - The Master (2012)

Leonardo DiCaprio

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - The Aviator (2004)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role - Blood Diamond (2006)

Leo is obviously the popular choice, but I think ole Joaquin puts in that work even if most his movies aren't as mainstream. I'm going with Joaquin.

Leo and it's not even close.

I know this is a terrible thing to say but I can't take Phoenix seriously with that cleft lip scar. It's too damn distracting.

Leo.

The thing where Phoenix went all awol for that mockumentary thing was beyond stupid.

I actually think they're about equal.

Joaquin Phoenix is more of a method actor whereas Leo uses his charisma to drive his roles.

Phoenix's performances are more low-key while Leo's are very in your face.

They both are excellent at what they do.

I think Leo will get more votes because he's the bigger box office draw.

truth.

hence why I asked "who is the more talented actor?" because of that reason.

Leo has more Oscar snubs than Phoenix has great performances(and I am fan of Joaquin)...Look at his body of work. Blood Diamond is one of the very few films he was nominated for and its not even his top 5(which are The Departed, Aviator, Gilbert, Catch Me and Shutter Island)*

He's not the box office draw or the mega-millionaire that Leo is but the answer is Joaquin Phoenix

It isn't a specific question, and finding an answer is difficult. You could say, who's the better movie star? (Leo) Who's got the bigger range? (Leo) Who's more intense? (Phoenix) Who disappears more into his roles? (Phoenix)

For this:

talented actor?

I'd probably say Phoenix. He's more out of the Brando, Mifune, Kinski feel of acting. His performance in The Master is better than anything Leo has done.

Before he jumped off the deep end. Leonardo DiCaprio isn't that bad of an actor though. He was incredible in The Departed.

Leo is a decent actor but highly overrated. He was the worst part of Gangs of New York.

Leo is good, but I struggle with his capabilities of mastering differing roles.

Joaquin Phoenix and Johnny Depp are much more impressive to me. They do a better job of changing up their acting style for each role they get into.

Leo is pretty much the same every time.

Leo.

I'm amazed that he doesn't have an Oscar for best actor
