So does the SR1911 win the bargain 1911 category?

Got a little bit of cash($600) to spend from the holidays, and was thinking about a 1911. Might be able to push it a little.
Budget ones are the SR1911, Springfield mil-spec, RIA, STI V, and Taurus PT1911? I have also seen The SW1911 barely used for around $600
Does the SR1911 win this competition? What is the deal with this mil-spec and GI stuff? Are the fore grips slippery since most of these don't have checkering?

Me either. I have shot a few 1911s before, but other than that, I'm basically clueless. Haven't really read anything consistently bad about the SR1911 though

I think it does. My friend has one and it's just a beautiful gun. I'm not a Taurus guy, but I hear they are better than they used to be. But, if you are going to go on the bargain side for a 1911, I think the SR1911 is tough to beat.

Rugers 1911 is very tough to beat. For that price, it is shocking how well fitted it is and how smooth the trigger is. It also has extremely sharp sights, good checkered grips, and a standard plug and guide rod as a 1911 should.
I have a little preference to the commander one after shooting both. It balances so well and feels just as good as the full size.
If you snag an SR1911 you'll be a happy man. Maybe ill do a review of it too...

You will not be disappointed. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and love it. Just use ball ammo to break in for a couple of hundred rounds and you should be good to go. I also have a Glock, a G19, that I really like, but everyone who enjoys shooting pistols should own a 1911. I found the Ruger on Gunbroker for $650 including shipping from discount guns.com. Very pleased to say the least.

I thought they were decent until I shot one and felt how buttery smooth they were. I guess it was love at first shot.

mil-spec and GI means it's a very basic model using "military" (i.e. very low profile front and rear sights) and does not have a beavertail grip safety (the curvy part at the top of the grip safety; a beavertail help protect the shooter's hand from getting bit by the slide/hammer during recoil). A "Tactical" may also have some other enhancements not found on the "GI" model such as:
lowered ejection port, target hammer, target trigger, extended thumb safety and extended slide release. Although I HATE to see the word "Tactical" attached to the model of a gun, but in this situation, I rec a "Tactical" model
; it doesn't usually cost much more and I find the higer profile sights much easier to use. If you find the grips too slippery, replace them for little $$.

I don't think the Taurus is in the race. RIA's are nice guns, but if you're happy spending $600, I wouldn't choose the RIA (or the Metro Arms, American Classic or Citadel that are similar but not listed). I don't have any personal experience w/ STI, but I've read a lot of good press on them. I think King Ranch has one? SA are good, but I'd not get the mil-spec. S&W is well liked, but if it's used, be sure you're getting a good one. The Ruger has been well received. Before buying, handle a Commander sized 19911 (4 .25" barrel instead of the usual 5" barrel; for some, myself included, the Commander handles better than the full size. I'm waiting for Ruger to come out w/ an alloy framed Commander.

I do have an STI but it's a race gun. I don't have much experience with their normal models.
