More impressive record: Marino's 48 in 1984 or Manning's 51 in 2013?

Marino. Manning's 49 td season was more impressive also. It was prior to rule changes

That's actually false. They really started enforcing the illegal contact rule (Ty Law rule) in 2004 after the Patriots punked the Colts in the 2003 AFC Championship Game. QB numbers really took a huge jump that year. Donovan McNabb, Drew Brees and Daunte Culpepper all had QB ratings over 104 in 2004. Culpepper actually accounted for over 5000 yards of total offense by himself. 2004 was really the year when QB numbers really started to take off.

Yes.

Just like rushing for 1000 yards today is not a special accomplishment either. It's 62.5 yards a week.

Marino if they must be compared

Just looking at the list of quarterback production today versus the 80s makes clear how different the game is today versus 30 years ago. Matt Schaub is not close to or better than Dan Fouts.

Yeah...he would. He threw for over 5,000 yards and 48 touchdowns in 1984. NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR!! The next time someone threw for over 5,000 yards would be over 20 years later when Drew Brees did it with the rule changes.

Well something odd was going on in the NFL in 1984. Neil Lomax threw for over 4,600 yards that year.
