I have a 11.5 week old German Shorthaired Pointer and have been searching for some books on point training. A buddy gave me VHS copies of Gun Dog and Water Dog by Richard Wolters, but those are more specific to Retriever training. Found a few that seem promising on gundogsuppply, but just wondering what the fine folks on the outdoor board have to say.

Ask Wic and or Chopique.... they can help you out. I trained mine to duck hunt... well we will see here in the next week if I trained him to duck hunt
My buddy's dog is down for the count with a couple tumors that popped up that had to be taken off and mine is being thrown into the fire...

Pointing instinct is 90% built in. Let him be a puppy, take him for walks let him explore, call him back. Teach him to come and whoa naturally. Get some birds to get him interested, let him chase and promote the natural instinct. As he get bigger put a check cord on him to slow him down, continue doing what you have been doing. Wild birds are the best teacher but young dogs are not going to find wild birds.

About 6-8 months of age he will listen to you within 10-12' and give you the big at a further distance. At this point it is time for a shock collar. The collar is not to teach it is to reinforce commands that he knows, and most dogs needs just a little tingle to get them to listen. The shock collar keeps them honest and safe and a valuable tool if used correctly.

It really isn't rocket science, much easier than retriever training...

Thanks Wick! I took her to Farr Park this morning to find some birds. When I found some, we quietly walked up from behind some trees. As soon as she spotted them, her body took over. Head, spine, and tail lines up, and that front paw lifted, then she looked up to me as if to say, "what the hell just happened?" Crazy what DNA will do.

This is sight pointing, scent pointing will come later. When that happens, in a calm and soothing voice tell her whoa, over and over...

You thought I was full of shite didn't you... I did the same thing. I had no plans to get a shock collar, wasn't going to fail on my training. When mine did it he took off and took me 40 minutes to get him back and almost get hit by a couple of cars. I walked in the house and ordered a collar, that was the end of the no collar experiment.

My dogs love it when I grab the collars, they know we are going somewhere. They start jumping around, whining etc...

Yeah, she stays in the house. I have a 2.5 year old golden retriever, and they pal around together all day.

i borrowed my buddy's collar and it didn't take much.... my wife has this weak arse Nola Coture collar that he wears everyday, but when I grab "his" collar dude goes ape shite... that and his leash... its crazy
he absolutely hates to be left inside if i go outside. I am now fully comfortable with him running around outside while i'm at the pit and what not, he listens well and its finally starting to sink in for him i think. he is about 1.5yrs now.

be prepared, the older they get the more shite tends to belong to them. they are very personable dogs, but they will claim shite in your house. Mine has never chewed anything other than a piece of paper or something laying around like that and he is left out in the house while I an the wife are at work. I always try to come home for about an hour each day to play with him outside. That sum bitch has a $200 dog bed (tempurpedic) and has claimed my couch instead. Also, dude loves to get under the covers in the bed... this seems to be across the board as well for the most part. Not sure if your in baton rouge, but there is a GSP club here.

My wife's fault also, he sleeps under her legs. The second night we had him my wife put her arm around the puppy, pulled the coverers up, looked at me and said you need to go put him in the cage. She had been around dogs her entire life, her choice. 13 years later she still bitches about him sleeping under legs.

shite man, i'll be honest i don't know the exact name. My wife found them on facebook. Think they usually go to the dog park on burbank and let the dogs play together or something like that. She went from never having a dog, being pissed that I got one (gift from parents) to loving that dog more than she could have ever imagined. She constantly looks on the net for GSP shite.

On the upland side the Vizsla club has a good network and AKC trial. Just have to remember that they like their breed more than yours...
