1974,

Bad timing, law of averages, too. Yes I know stellar teams would not have faltered. But the Tigers lost 4 games that year to squads that hadn't beaten LSU in a long time that fielded one of their better teams in years: Texas A&M,Florida,Kentucky, and Mississippi State. All four games were close with only Florida winning by more than one TD.

LSU had beaten all 4 the year before.A&M went 8-3 and turned down a Bluebonnet Bowl bid and went all or nothing on the Cotton and got pounded by Texas, 32-3 so they stayed home.Kentucky went 6-5 and lost to Tennessee in a game which decided the Liberty, Florida went to the Sugar and Miss State went to the Sun Bowl.

Now, the Alabama game was just a smackdown added by then #1 Ohio State losing before kickoff to Michigan State putting Alabama at #1 with a win and the only thing that stands out about the Rice game is Rice trying some 70 yd field goal on the last play of the game.

Didn't we play Rice in Shreveport and it was a 13 13 tie?

I remeber listen to LSU vs USC in the rain on a old radio. I think USC won 6-3 or something. They were like Number One in the country. Charley Mac's teams played hard always and always had great defenses.

Sort of a tired narrative. Here's Mac's last 6 seasons. Unless the Bear was moving around and coaching multiple teams each season, there were a lot more people Mac was not beating.

quote:

1974 Charles McClendon 5-5-1 (2-4)
1975 Charles McClendon 5-6 (2-4)
1976 Charles McClendon 7-3-1 (3-3)
1977 Charles McClendon 8-4 (4-2) Sun Bowl 15
1978 Charles McClendon 8-4 (3-3) Liberty Bowl
1979 Charles McClendon 7-5 (4-2) Tangerine Bowl

Dude had a decent run, but his time had clearly come for him to move on.

The 1979 team might have lost 5 games but they took both Number 1 teams in the nation down to the last play, losing to USC 17-12, and Bama 3 nothing. I think Bama only crossed the 50 yard line once the whole game.

Posted by prplhze2000 on 12/22 at 10:31 pm to Lonnie4LSU I liked Mac. He loved LSU. But I think in the mid-70's, the game began to pass him by and he didn't adapt. Recruiting and offense became stale. Then there is the matter of not getting real support from the school in terms of money. Then there was Bama. Nuff said. One thing forgotten. How many Bear assistants became winning head coaches. That is the kind of staff Mac faced every year. Reply • Options • Back to Top

I remember listening to that Bama game as a 10 yr old boy. My dad went to that game. It was a muddy death valley. John Ferguson, the voice of the Tigers, came across my little AM radio in my grandparents home. May they all RIP.

The loss of recruit Johnny Hector to Texas A&M also contributed to Mac's demise.

Was 79 and not raining at all as I recall; we lost 12-17. Yes they were #1 and CCM played them and most great teams hard just couldn't break into elite status wins which caused his demise as other have noted!

So by my count the great Bear Bryant lost 9 bowl games from 64-79. What would we do to Miles for that?
