I did want to add that it was funny that I watched American Psycho recently. The physical differences in Bale between the two movies are incredible.

Have you seen The Machinist?

The movie was good. Individual parts were great, but as a whole the movie left me wishing it had been better. Maybe I just built it up in my head too much.

The Wolf of Wall Street, to me was infinitely better. I was surprised as hell when I looked at my watch as the credits started rolling. Had no idea 3 hours had passed.

Edit: Changed The Mechanic to The Machinist

It's actually the Machinist (sorry I know it's a snobby correction) but it's interesting that you say you liked TWOWS a lot more because I felt the exact opposite. I thought the plot was hollow and there was really nothing that interesting about it other than the sex and drugs. I thought American Hustle was much more interesting, clever/funny, better acting plot and characters. Not saying it was a bad movie at all, just didn't love it like I love AH.

i thought WoWS was funnier in the theater the day after i saw AH but i bet you i'll think AH is funnier in 5 years

WoWS was certainly a very hollow movie that probably will have shite re-watchability

It was just pretty much everything that I thought it was going to be. Still an entertaining and funny movie but it didn't really wow me at any point.

You're right, I meant The Machinist (edited it).

I liked both movies. TWOWS just killed it with every scene for me, though. Many say it felt hollow or was shallow because the characters didn't change much throughout the film, therefore not following traditional character development arcs for a proper story...but, the real life people they were portraying acted exactly this way. They are greedy assholes even now.

American Hustle, to me, just didn't leave me saying "wow" once the credits rolled. Still a great movie, though and I'd like to watch it again, alone instead of with others as I did in the theater.

Side note...thought DeNiro being well versed in Arabic was about as unbelievable as anything I've seen in any movie (and something that is not true about the real life mobster he was portraying).

I agree. I don't remember laughing that much during The Wolf of Wall Street. Certain scenes in American Hustle had me rolling, though.

ETA: From another thread:
quote:

There were some funny moments in [Wolf], but not that many. Scorsese is - well, should be - better than physical humor: jerking off, sticking candles in asses, guys paralyzed by drugs, etc. I don't find any of that shite funny. It felt like amateur hour.

True. And I'm not taking anything away from the performances because they were excellent. I probably just connected with the storyline of AH more. Both movies are great though.

Yes. Funny that American Hustle is being promoted as a comedy now while WOWS was the movie going for the cheap laughs.

Going to add my two cents...saw it today...

DeNiro - I know a small role...but when he plays the intimidating mafia guy...he is so great...always on edge

Amy Adams - those that thought she could not keep up, I could not disagree more...I put her and Bale as even in this movie and that is hard to say considering how great Bale was..

Renner - I have never been a big fan, and was expecting to hate him...but damn if I was not rooting for him somehow someway to get out of it..

Soundtrack...two big thumbs up...Dirty Work was great in its scene...

As for Louis CK, this and Blue Jasmine, he has showed his chops this year...

And I laughed a lot...the whole microwave scene was great

It's like Bill Murray's whisper to Scarlett Johansson at the end of Lost in Translation. We'll never know.

Wasn't meant to be a comedy in the sense of Ace Ventura. But it was definitely a comedy.

agreed. that's such a terrific performance by her especially given Bale's absolutely superb performance.

Every time Cooper interrupted Louie or when he yelled at him to finish the fricking story.

The face Bale made after Cooper fricked his comb-over masterpiece gave me a good belly laugh
