I've always found the Prohibition-era mob genre fascinating (e.g. Boardwalk Empire is my favorite current show on TV), and I'm a big Coen Bros. fan.

That said, I was very unimpressed with Miller's Crossing and found the film barely entertaining. I didn't like the casting choices, in particular Gabriel Byrne as the lead. I know this movie is highly regarded on this board (and considered very underrated). What am I missing?

If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. A little surprised you had a problem with the casting choices though. Who would you have preferred over Byrne?

Ditto on both accounts. I think Miller's Crossing is a masterpiece.

I can't even say. He just didn't do it for me. I just found the film much less entertaining/compelling/witty than other Coen Bros. films. I've seen some on here saying it's their favorite one and I just didn't get that feeling upon viewing.

Yeah, I'm a huge Coen Bros fan, I even liked Barton Fink, but Miller's Crossing fricking sucked.

I found it to be meh over all. But being a Coen film it damn sure had its moments.

I can agree with this. But the meh feeling for the movie as a whole is what was most surprising for me.

Albert Finney with a Tommy Gun disagrees.

Nothing. Different strokes. It's a fantastic film no doubt, you just may not have a personal affinity to it.

Sounds like you're giving Miller's Crossing the "high hat".

Let's assume for the sake of argument that I disagree with you on Gabriel, but I can understand that position. The character is not particularly likeable for a hero, and that may have been problematic if you like Byrne.

Okay, so let's talk about the others:

Finney? I give him an A+

Turturro? A

Polito? A

Harden? B+

Freeman? B+

There are things that I can understand - if you didn't like the Coan Bros style -

Okay, so that's not it. The world created is surreal, but that's almost the rule in Coen Bros. films - Barton Fink, Hudsucker, Ladykillers, etc.

The story is a little disjointed and the twists could be a little offputting, but the casting? This is one of the best Coen Bros. casts - Finney, particularly (Turturro and Polito are always great, and nearly pitch perfect here, as well).
