So I want to see what you people think of this idea.

How many of you are tired of the people taking your drive thru order?

IDEA: How about when you drive to a fast food restaurant your car is sensed by sensors at the driveway entrance. Their menu is automatically uploaded to your touchscreen in the car (granted some people don't have this so not sure what they would do). You place your order on the screen and it is sent by bluetooth to a screen inside the restaurant and they make your order. It would take away the jobs of millions and I would be a billionaire. What do you think??

You could incorporate this idea as well

And you're definitely not thinking this through enough. Ideally you would just load money into a smart phone app that would check in at the location and you would place your order that way and your account would be automatically debited. A lot more people have smart phones than touch screens in their cars.

So every car would need to be retrofitted with a comm device to connect with the restaurant's device? And I assume BK will have a different style device than McD. So how many of these stupid things do I need to have installed on my car, and at what cost?

This idea needs A LOT of work.

Yea that is much smarter. But seriously why is this not done? Seems inexpensive and easy to implement.

It seems that way because you haven't thought it through at all. It took me two seconds to think up some really big complications to your "inexpensive and easy to implement" idea.

How does the order get put together and handed to you once the millions of jobs are taken away? If you say your system is automated enough to cook the food, package it, properly fill the order, and present it to you then how much does that system cost?

No I never talked about making the food. Granted that link provided earlier showed some Robot mechanisim. I think the smartphone app would be a better idea. Just didnt think of that.

You are overestimating the general population. People are idiots. They would find a way to mess it up. For simple things like ordering a pizza this works, but when there is more customization available like at most fast food places it would cause a lot of issues. Plus, most people would prefer human interaction.

They do have this kind of machine in some carl's jr though at the inside counter. They have had them for a few years, but the workers said they aren't very popular.

They already have this in place for pizza co apps. You order the pizza through the app and pick it up or have it delivered. The problem here is that many fast food chains want you to also order other items spontaneously. They may see the phone order as an extra expense and they lose money from the... ahhh what the hell throw in a super size shake crowd.

The margins of these fast food chains may not be large enough to also incorporate app support and development.

I have thought about this a lot, and for a long time. It would be very easy and cheap to implement and roll out.

No, as already mentioned, a smartphone will suffice. Every fast food place already has wifi, so no crazy hardware is required. There may be issues doing it via wifi, so maybe an NFC scanner at the cashier and drive-thru would be better. Either way, this is cheap stuff that would probably pay for itself in a week's worth of orders that wouldn't get fricked up. And it could be entirely optional. While waiting in line, you might see a sign "order with our app", so you whip out your phone and tap in your order. When you get to the speaker, just wave your phone by the NFC reader. Wave your phone by the reader at the pay window too.

This is really simple stuff, and there is absolutely no technical reason why it won't work.

I would guess because it takes more effort to push through all the options than to simply speak what you want.

I avoid the self-checkout lines a lot because its always yelling at you and is slower than me just handing it the cashier.

A mobile app could upsell the hell out of some shite. An app could ask you to tap a button to supersize for $1 (or whatever) every time it's applicable, while a person probably wouldn't bother to ask every time. A program doesn't get tired of asking the same question over and over.

Purpose-built machines are doomed to failure. Only one person can use it at a time, you essentially have to learn the interface after you walk up to it, they are expensive, etc.

With a smartphone app, everyone has their own device so basically everyone can order at once, it can save your own personal orders, they are cheap, etc.

Someone should get to work on building a universal ordering app, provide it for free, and sell food places on NFC readers and interfaces to their equipment, and service contracts.

I live in Baton Rouge. It wouldn't be the worst thing if we eliminated that aspect here.

Well none of that was in the OP Your's sounds like a much better idea that could actually work.

I thought about this a good while back.

Think of the idiots trying to use the system

It wouldn't work
