Austin Rivers is one point behind Jrue Holiday in defensive rating

Per basketball reference:
109 vs 110 points allowed per 100 possessions

Lol advanced stats or is Austin improving defensively?

both.

drating is a team thing, right? i'm not even sure if there is an individual defensive metric.

It's pretty obvious that Rivers has become a pesky on ball defender. If he can figure out his offensive game he'd have a bright future.

He has definitely developed into a good defender. If only he didn't suck so much on offense. He should just focus on being a 3 and D guard.

that doesn't mean no improvement. you can improve and still be below average.

Synergy had Holiday number one in the league in isolation defense as of a couple weeks ago.

Rivers' saving grace, even last year, as an NBA player has been his effort(he hustles his arse off) and his defense. Things nobody saw coming from a guy who was supposed to be an entitled, Kobe-wannabe, offense only diva.

His offensive game is just broken though.

He's basically the opposite player of every scouting report of him coming out of HS and Duke.

Rivers is not good enough for this level. No further reasoning shoukd be needed.

DRtg and ORtg can be computed on and individual and a team level. The team clearly influences the final number.

For what it is worth, I just look at how a player fits defensively with respect to teammates and his situation and do not use it compare players in vastly different situations.

Here, I read that Rivers is as good as Holiday (about) against lesser competition in short bursts. He may or may not be comparable over a longer period of time against stiff competition.
