Students on the OB, looking for summer jobs?

Many tourism/guide services, etc in Ak are hiring for the summer season. If you've ever wanted to do something different, spend time in a world class scenic place, get to do excursions and trips (flightseeing, rafting, kayaking, fishing, etc) for free...it's a good time to check out some of the sites like Coolworks, etc.
HAPA (Holland America/Princess) is hiring for driver guides which is an awesome job and you can made pretty good money. LINK
There are hundreds of other operators besides HAP, they are just the largest.
HAP Alaska has locations in Fairbanks, Juneau, Anchorage, Skagway, Ketchikan etc. They also have remote locations such as Cooper Landing, Copper River, etc.
If you ever really wanted a summer job that has the opportunity for adventure, and to see some places you may never see as well as working with some awesome people, it's the time to take that chance.

Is this where you work in a canning factory?

Well, I'm no spring chicken. But I'd love to take a "sabbatical" from this drilling operation and fish all summer.

i would have loved to do this. Not the Motorcoach but doing something up there.

They hire a lot of rafting and kayak guides. QUite a few in JNU. No experience necessary, but it's a plus. Most companies do the training. Probably 5,000 seasonal jobs just in S.E. Alaska alone. Jeep guides, hiking guides, glacier guides..

Not something I would recommend, but some students and a lot of Filipinos seem to like it. Tourism jobs are much much better though.

My recommendation is to go do it if you can.
I took jobs in coastal Connecticut and South Carolina teaching sailing. It was awesome.
Well SC was awesome, CT paid me a small fortune (like $20 hr and 40 hr week) but the people were miserable. I took a pay cut to go to the beach in SC, GREAT decision.

You can make good money depending on the job. Driver-guides make great tips on top of wages. I know guys who paid their rent in tip money.

Free housing was part of the jobs.
In CT it was in people's houses kind of boarding- not that great but I was only 19.
In SC I had my own apartment attached to some mansion where no one lived in the summer, they only wintered there.

Some ops pay for housing in Ak. I know in Denali N.P. they do. Skagway, AK they do. In JNU, they normally don't.

I visited Alaska this past July via a cruise and enjoyed all the the excursions that I took. All of the guides were students from the lower 48. They were excellent and I tipped them well. It would be a fantastic experience for a student.

I was the Division Mgr for Cruise West when they operated, and the quality of driver guide we got was nothing short of amazing. Lots of highly qualified people looking for experience in Ak for a summer.
HAP employes thousands of workers all over the state. I've watched some people come back after college and make the business a career.
There are some more adventurous companies always looking for guides. Glacier guides, hiking guides or kayak guides. River rafting in Denali or Juneau.

Friend of mine takes people to the ice caves on he Mendenhall Glacier. What a way to make money...
One of the ladies that was on "Naked and Afraid" works for Gastineau Guiding, leading hiking tours and whale watching excursions.
Here's a link to Coolworks Ak job page. LINK
