Anyone feed their dog carrots to clean their teeth?

Just heard about this the other day from a vet friend. My dog hates having her teeth brushed. Actually it's a futile attempt to brush them.Gave her a carrot yesterday and to my surprise she scarfed it down like it was a treat.

pulled this little tidbit off the webs.

Feeding carrots and other raw vegetables to dogs can help maintain a clean mouth and protect teeth from dental disease. A major benefit of chewing on carrots is that they massage your dog’s gums and enhance blood flow to the gum tissues. Carrots contain vitamin A, which is necessary for maintaining healthy tooth enamel. The minerals in carrots kill germs in the mouth and help prevent tooth damage. The carrot’s natural abrasiveness that helps eliminate the dirt that leads to plaque that forms on your dog’s teeth and beneath the gums. Carrots are great for dental health, because they help remove food particles, increase saliva, prevent tooth decay and destroy harmful germs in your dog’s mouth.
Fibrous Foods

High-fiber foods, including vegetables and certain fruits, accelerate the production of saliva. Saliva counteracts the negative effects of sugar and acids created by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates in fresh vegetables and fruits. Crunchy vegetables, such as raw carrots, not only increase saliva flow but are high in nutrients and low in calories. Saliva is an acid neutralizer, so it helps rinse food particles and sugars that could lead to plaque formation on your dogs’ teeth.

Never heard of that. I just use an old sock and some dog specific minty toothpaste. We have 4 dogs and none of them mind it.

We give our pooch carrots and green beans for treats. She loves them. But I think it's because they get pulled out from the fridge and she thinks she is getting people food.

Been giving my dog carrots about 3 or 4 years now. More as a healthy snack than anything. Don't know about dental benefits....his breath still smells like ass.

Mine is on the threshold of gum disease. Her breath stinks pretty bad and whenever I can brush her teeth her gums always bleed pretty bad. Hoping this will help her out because I don't want to have to take her in and have her teeth cleaned with anesthesia.

Well SPade is the only one that's really mine. My parents rescued one and then took in two strays last year.

Same here. We fill his kong with baby carrots to keep him occupied in his kennel for a little while when we leave the house

You could leave a steak on the ground when you leave and my dog will not touch it. As soon as you walk in the door, he sprints to what you left hours ago.

My dogs love carrots, but the shred them an then roll in them. It's pretty funny to watch, not so much to clean..

My dog loves hard, crunchy vegetables. We rarely give her the greenies and rawhides yet the vets have said her teeth look good, so I'd say it does help clean their teeth.
