He said it last month on SVP and Russillo during the time of the Ahmad Brooks/Drew Brees controversy. Do you agree with his comments? I think he makes a lot of good points.

quote:

Ryen Russillo: Trent, I want to ask you a bigger picture though. We're going to get to the game here in a second. I'm confused every single week. I like to think that I know a little something about football. I've watched so many games for probably three decades now and I'm confused as I've ever been as a consumer about what the rules are in this league.

Trent Dilfer: Bro, you know a lot about football and I'm not just saying that. You guys are two of the smartest guys on the radio when it comes to football and I could not agree with you more. I'm paralyzed by my confusion on what I see every week. My job was to know every single rule. When I called the double header on Monday Night football Week 1, I have to know all the rules. And I can't. They're too convoluted and that's exactly what I tried to say on the pregame show is "Listen, ratings are up. People are gambling as much as ever. Fantasy football is awesome. The product sucks." The NFL product sucks. It's still going to be consumed but the game is not nearly as good. Part of the badge of honor of playing QB in the NFL was standing in there and taking shots to the face and throwing a 20-yard dig route. That's what separated you from other guys. And now that's not part of the game. Every single week, you can clip off 5-8 plays that are deciding games that nobody really understands why. We have a joke in the war room. I started it. The league throws a penalty for roughhousing like two little 10-year-old kids wrestling in the downstairs basement. If that goes on in a game, a flag is thrown.

Okay, I erased all of the comments about Drew Brees to make it easier for you to read. What do you think about his comments now?

It's been basketball on grass and pitch and catch for awhile now.

No fear.

Can't defend the receivers. Can't touch or hit them.

Which is why anyone with a brain doesn't take all these passing records seriously.

You get 1/4 of the pressure QBs used to face on guys today...Brady, Brees, etc...and suddenly nothing works...see Seattle and last week's game.

The best games the NFL has had the last few years...were when the Giants and Niners met...and some Seattle/Niners slug-fests - when getting a TD was a huge deal...each yard gained meant something.

Carolina/Niners this year was refreshing.

Marching up and down the field Arena style is a crappy product.

And it's not because suddenly we live in an age where every QB is awesome.

Hell, 17 of the Top 20 QBs on the all-time passer rating list...started their careers 1998 onward...

It's an era that made good QBs look great and average QBs look good.

My favorite part was when he discussed the joke that "they" have in the war room, and then he took sole credit for conceiving said joke, and then said joke sucked.

Been that way for a while. Many have lost interest, but a new batch of future fans are born every year to replace them. As long as they are making money, they don't care if the product sucks or not.

Well how would you fix the product? The game can only be play by people, are they suppose to start hitting people or call more running plays?

This. I actually think he started to say something else and realized it wasn't appropriate for radio.

It's more than that...

Don't be such a bigot to anything that happened more than 5 minutes ago.

It's not even about toughness really. But shite, I don't even recognize defense anymore. Used to be, half the point of a big hitting safety was to keep the ball from coming across the middle. Nobody worries about that shite anymore because you can't hit the guy when he's "defenseless".

QBs used to get annihilated. Now, I know why they adjusted that, but, it's gone to the point that basically, an average offensive line can make it so the QB just plays as if it's 7 on 7.

It's funny because when Arena football showed up, it was made fun of by NFL fans for good reason. Then, the NFL became Arena on a bigger yard.

Well, you missed out.

Or maybe this 2000 generation likes video game football...it's all they've ever known.

But you might want to heed the perspective of those who have seen both.

This isn't the past is better because it's old...it's more, the present sucks so the past wins by default.

The game has changed that much in the last 10 years.

It's apparent to most.

They're overprotecting QB, which Dilfer would no doubt agree with if he were still playing today.

The easiest and simplest fix ever

Go back to pre-Goodell everything. Do away with all the anti-hitting rules, get rid of the Thursday Night games, go back to kickoffs from the 30 etc
