Finally got around to watching Dune

I literally don't know what I just watched. This must be a cult classic in the sense that Flash Gordon is.
I'm not sure I will be able to recover from this for several days.

The miniseries movie that SyFy made back in 2000 was much better than the original movie and easier to follow.

Never seen dune or Flash Gordon. Always wanted to though. I bet Ted would've been funnier to me if I'd seen Flash Gordon.

The book is great. The movie was ambitious. It was just a difficult and maybe close to impossible task to do the book correctly in movie form. The movie actually gets a lot of criticism. I still like the movie though for how epic it is, and it introduced me to the books.
Watch the scifi channel version if you want to better understand what's going on. The acting and costumes are pretty cheesy, but it is much more faithful and complete to the story.

It was bad, but I hope you read the book. I read the book before I watched the movie or sci-fi mini series. I enjoyed it more, but I think I didn't mind how terrible it was because I was comparing my imagination from reading the book to the set.

Fun fact: it was hoped that Ridley Scott would direct the film but he decided to go with Blade Runner instead.
And yeah it's hard to watch but Dune is still awesome. The inter-monologue is what makes it hilarious.

Scenes with the Baron left me with a blank stare and probably shut down all other brain activities. There is a good bit of gore too. It was really hard to follow. On Wikipedia, I read some excerpts from a review that claimed the entire movie was homophobic and made fun of aids. I got a good laugh out of that.
I'll have to look into the books.

The movie is terrible. David Lynch is a great director but Dune was a confusing, muddled mess. I don't see how anybody can rate it highly. Maybe the movie is a much better experience after reading the book but I really had a difficult time getting into it.

I have read the book and seen the movie twice before but not for 10 years or so.
I like the movie but clearly it has major issues.
It was overly ambitious with CGI of the day not being able to hold up.
If made today, it would probably be split into 2 or 3 movies which would allow for better development of the characters.
I normally hate remakes but this is a book (series) that needs a movie to do it justice.

It is rare when I agree with Blue Velvet, but when I do, it is usually emphatic agreement.
Dune is a visual masterpiece, albeit flawed (and what isn't?) - even Herbert agreed with it as a successful visualization.

As for Flash Gordon - if you can't enjoy that movie, I just don't know what to tell you. That movie is fun with a capital "F".

I love the Lynch movie, but more for nostalgia than anything. Visually, the movie is stunning. Story-wise, it was convoluted. I finally read the books years ago, and was blown away. When I found out that Frank Herbert's son, Brian, was going to finish the series, I was ecstatic. Then I read Brian's books, and was completely let down.
