Personal preference, but Ella wins this in a landslide for me. Holiday's voice sounds pretty grating to me, and I find it difficult to listen to her. Honestly, I don't get the appeal.

Anyone else?

Billie Holiday all day. Her gritty sound is what I like most. Listening to the despair that rings from her voice transports me to a jazz club, bellies me up to the bar, and makes me savor that bourbon that I'm slowly sipping.

Aside from the Bourbon, I feel the same way about Ella.

I get what you are saying about her grit, but I almost feel like I need bourbon to listen to Billie.

Billie Holiday for me and it's not even close. The pain in her voice echoed her life and career, painful and much too short. Many consider her to be the greatest jazz vocalist of all time. She left behind a body of work as great as any vocalist before or since.

Lady Day.
