My dad is 70 and quit shooting when he got a pacemaker. He kinda misses the camp atmosphere and wanted some time out of the house because mama retired this year.

We talked longer than we have in ages. He got a tour of the lease. He got accommodations in a ramshackle trailer. He got treated to Cousins Catfish in Hamburg and the Piggy Sue in Montcello, AR. We drank Buffalo Trace and hung out by the fire ring (a tractor rim) at night. We hunted out of a 4x8 tower and watched the does browse around for a good long time. After I shot a doe, he carried my rifle as I dragged it out of the woods.

When I got to the far side of a huge mud puddle, I heard a splash behind me. Yep, pops went down, rifle first. I held my breath til I knew he was alright, then we had a good laugh.

While I cleaned my rifle, everyone else cleaned theirs too. Then we all cleaned the camp and shut it down til next year.
Dad wants to come back and may even start shooting a crossbow. I hope that happens. Good times.

Good memories man. My Dad is 60 and I enjoy every minute we spend at the lease.

I'm in a similar situation except it's my grandpa. I grew up with him taking me to the woods every chance we got and I absolutely loved it. He's in his early 70's now and hasn't hunted once this year to take care of my ailing grandma. I'd love for him to make it to the woods with me this season b/c I don't think he has many left in him. I'm somewhat selfish b/c I feel that he should spend every morning/evening with me in the woods.

Can't fault him for taking care of the love of his life though

I love the silence and tranquility of nature. It does wonders to connect people.

I'm glad you and your pop got to spend that time together. You'll remember these days.

Awesome!

I took pops on a teal hunt last year and he promptly fell in the rice field with his brand new A400.

Great way to end the season.

I really enjoy the times I get to spend with my father in the woods. They never seem to last.

My dad is 75 and still checks to make sure I didn't get stuck or lost (I never do, but he feels the need to make sure). He hunts about 3 days a week by himself and SOMETIMES he bothers to tell my mom which stand he is going to hunt that day.

This is what its about. Dad is 72 and still walks the woods with me with his trusty 12g, just like he did when I first started. Hunting is one of the ways I'll remember him when he's gone.

We talked about that this weekend, not about him but about his dad and my uncle who have passed. His dad got us fishing and was a great gardener, carpenter and painter. My uncle got us both hunting. Whenever we do those things we think of them and wish we could talk to them again.

I still call my dad almost every time I start a project, just to see what he thinks about it.

I kind of wish I had, but he offered......

On the bright side, I took my rifle all the way apart and it is cleaner than it's been since the 1990s. I was surprised there was no rust or anything where the stock covers up the luck, lock/barrel, just a lot of grime. I think I may have to rezero it though.

Nice, yat.

I always look forward to my yearly long range fishing trip with my old man. It's always great to see him grin when he hooks into a big ole tuna and the reel starts screaming. I hope to have many more years of that.
