Weight gain or weight loss for roles by males in Hollywood?

Seems to me each gets praise in its own way when estsblished actors go this route.

Thing is...the female version isn't that permanent of a change.

Examples?

Charlize Theron put on some significant pounds for Monster.

Cameron Diaz uglied herself up pretty good in Being John Malkovich and no one cared.

I'm not really sure male actors get any special recognition for gaining weight or losing weight.

50 cent looked like a crack addict for that movie that flopped so bad no one knew it came out.
what a waste

But Christian Bale in the Machinist and Mcconaughey in Dallas Buyers club, both lost way too much weight to be healthy.

I mean, women do this too. Charlize Theron with Monster, sure, but even crappier films like Bridget Jones' Diary with Renee Zellwegger are examples of this.

What special recognition did they get? Or is it just acknowledged?
