Texas job via Alabama (circa 2002)

Coach Franchione left Alabama for a job in Texas in 2002 but I can't remember the circumstances as to why he left. Was he unhappy at Alabama? Was A&M just his dream job? Was Alabama facing probation?
I honestly can't remember why he made the lateral move. Anyone?

We had just received some very heavy sanctions that screwed us from 03-06 don't think we were back at full strength of scholarships until 07 or 08.
Franchione claims he was caught unaware the sanctions would be that bad and he bolted.
It hurt him more than us.
