This should be interesting. The early 90's Oilers are some of the bigger underachieving teams of all time. 93 team was the best. Started 1-4, then won 11 straight including Christmas Day at San Francisco only to choke in the divisional round at home. Pretty much sealed the fate of the Oilers in Houston.

This is about that team the year AFTER that game.

These Buddy Ryan tactic are familiar to a Saints fan because that's where Gregg Williams learned it.

What's really interesting is that the people who complain about the "wussification" of the NFL should be in support of Buddy Ryan and his tactics, and thus Gregg Williams and his insanity.

But they are/weren't.

I was 10 years old this year. Watched the KC game on Christmas Day in Crested Butte Co.

I remember this year very well.

I can't decide if the oilers were soft and buddy toughened them up or if he was just a massive dick

Buddy may have been frustrated by gilbride's stubbornness. Who knows. This was a good one

I think its more the later. At the end of the day, the team didn't do any more than they did before Ryan got there. After the choke in Buffalo, they needed a scape goat and DC Jim Eddy was an easy choice. As good as the O was, they did have some sick talent on D. The DL was loaded. Statistically the 93 D was about where it was the 2-3 years before and blew a big 2nd half lead. I was never a fan of Pardee as a HC and the owner bringing in Ryan was just a lethal combo. Gilbride had remained a successful coach he now has more SB rings than Buddy. Ryan's cheap shots just seem petty. For as much hype as he gets for being a great DC. Outside on 1985, his D did no better than run and shoot teams.

I was at that Chiefs playoff game. I was around 10 at the time, but I still remember Marcus Allen scoring to go up 8 left and realizing it was over because you couldn't go for 2 back then.

I remember Sean Jones better than anybody else off of that D-line.

he went to Green Bay after he left Houston. That was another key veteran signing the Packers made along with Reggie White that helped solidify their D-line.

I don't remember Jones being quite as good with Green Bay but he still had something left in the tank when he got there.

had a chance to finally watch it late last night.

I've found the last three weeks of A Football Life to be really good.

the one about Steve Gleason, the one about The Wall of Dallas, and this one.

I remember that 1993 season opener with New Orleans vaguely. It seemed like Houston's defense played okay but Houston's offense kept turning the ball over.

the most costly one was when Sam Mills blitzed Warren Moon, sacking him and causing a fumble. Frank Warren picked it up on a hop and ran it back for a TD.
