I'm an Iowa fan but on January 1, 2005 (cap 1 bowl) I became a fan of LSU as well. Since then they have been a second favorite team of mine. In fact; I purchased ticket for my wife and I to the LSU vs App St game in 08. We were getting back to Mobile from a cruise for our honeymoon. Unfortunately an approaching hurricane moved the game time up and we weren't able to make it to the game. I watch at least 7 LSU games every year. So, LSU is the team that I know second best.

Iowa breakdown:

QB - Rudock is a RS Soph in his first year as starter. He is very smart and has an accurate arm. He is very little threat to run. He struggles some with deep throws and throwing in the wind. We have no good depth behind him

RB - We have 4 good backs. Not great but good. 45 Weisman is a power back. He is a converted walk-on FB. 5 Bullock - decent pass catcher and blocker but, poor runner. 33 Canzeri - good all around back with speed. He goes down easy but is still our top back. For some reason he is still 3rd string. 29 Daniels - true FR power back with potential.

FB - Two decent lead blockers who have been improving.

TE - We can go 5 deep. 86 Fiedorowicz is 6-7 senior and clutch; can't break a tackle. 87 Duzey is a stud in the making. Out ran the entire OSU secondary for a long scores this year.

OL - Good overall. C Blythe is great. LG Boffeli is great and has really improved. LT Scherff is a stud but lacks consistency. RG we rotate two guys. RT Van Sloten has been solid but really struggled as a senior. He has a hard time with fast athletic guys.

WR - Poor. 11 Martin-Manley is the go to guy. 22 Powell has elite speed.

DL - Very solid and much improved. Will benefit from Alvis playing. Our DT use to sit back and pretty much spy the QB and then fail to stop him running. Our DE use to run too far up field and leave huge holes for a QB to run through. They play with good leverage.

LB - We start three SR with a ton of experience. They have played their best this season. 31 Hitchens is the best tackling and run stoping LB LSU will have faced all year.

CB -19 Lowery - big play ability but makes some poor plays. Similar to Mills. 14 King a true FR who has improved all year long. He shut down Michigan's Gallon late in the year.

S - Very poor 5 Miller SR one of the worst Safeties to start at Iowa in a long time. 37 Lowdermilk very poor as well. Both bite on PA a lot.

Special teams. K Meyer is good but poor in the clutch. P Kornbrath is poor. Kick coverage is good. KR is very poor. PR is decent.

I don't really need to tell you guys about LSU. I'll say that I think the LSU O-line is very good and under appreciated. Hill, Beckham, and Landry are three of the most talented skill guys in the country. Gallon is the only WR we have faced this year who is on the level of Beckham and Landry. Hill is similar to OSU RB Hyde. We struggled to stop him.

Key to the game: LSU OL vs Iowa DL This will be a great test for both units. Can LSU establish the run? Can they give Jennings time to throw deep against the week Iowa safeties? Can they allow LSU to not need long drives were they need to stay patient and consistent on offense?

Other keys: Will LSU give it their full effort?
Can Iowa keep improving?
Can Iowa block the elite LSU DL?

Prediction: LSU 27 Iowa 20

Why does Rudock drink so many Zimas?

Thanks for breakdown of Iowa. We know nothing about them.

But this guy:

LG Boffeli is great and has really improved

I actually played baseball with him in HS . He was 3 years below me but a total manchild. Was hitting mid 80s on the gun at 15. I've since moved on from my time in Iowa but get a kick out of seeing him becoming a quality D1 athlete now.

I'd add this. Powell is faster than most SEC wide receivers, but small, and apparently hasn't learned the playbook yet. Very, very small wide receiver. If he breaks loose, no one will catch him. On any team, anywhere. He will likely not break loose. Unless he develops a bunch in the next couple of weeks. Our coach can beat anyone, or come close, with this much time to prepare. That has been proven over and over again, for all of his other flaws, real or perceived. The exception was when we played USC the year before they began the NC run.

I'm not sure Scherff hasn't been consistent. He's been double teamed most of the year, and I'd expect LSU does the same. He's coming back his senior year. If he went NFL, he would have been a late 1st round, or early 2nd round pick.

I would expect LSU to pick apart our safeties. The corners get a lot of heat, but most corners do. Our safeties have improved, but they bite on run a lot. As in a lot.

As everywhere, either the LB's make the DL look good, or the other way around. We are solid in both areas, but have really, really good LB's. All 3 will sniff the NFL next year.

The TE's have developed in to good blockers, and we likely scheme around this. There is opportunity against LSU here. We scouted tOSU, and used this to our advantage until their overall athletic ability beat us. Even then, there was a circus play from their QB, or RB, I can't recall which, that made highlight films everywhere, and it was actually that we lost back shoulder contain. We were still in the game at that point. I called MSU beating tOSU, and MSU is the B1G's best team.

If I were LSU's football coach. I would watch the Iowa -v- MSU game film a lot.

Very similar running styles and both are big, quick backs. The difference is that Hyde gets more carries as the opponent becomes tougher to beat while Miles cuts Hill off. Their RB situation is exactly like ours too.

Wait till you see Dillon Gordon. JUMBO BRUISER.

He doesn't get much recognition because he's not very involved in the passing game, but he's a big-time blocker.

As a Michigan alumnus/fan and a life-long LSU fan, I know a little bit about both.

Iowa's strengths on offense match up well against LSU's defense. I felt that LSU's defense the whole season lacked size and strength compared to their former teams. The line backing core is a shell of what it once was and they have a glaring weakness at the middle line backing position. Iowa will not be forgiving to him. Also, the defensive line (particularly the two DTs), just haven't lived up to their expectations. Iowa will have success running the ball up the middle in my opinion.

The major rushing offenses we faced this season fared as such: Auburn - 213 (we caught them at the right time thankfully), Georgia - 196 (Gurley was out the entire second half too), Ole Miss - 176 yards, Alabama - 193 yards and Arkansas - 182 yards. I would be shocked if Iowa didn't rack up at least 150 yards rushing on the LSU defense. In my opinion, this will be your approach to winning the game. These long, methodical rushing drives will eat up a lot of clock and if the Hawkeye defense can get after a young, inexperienced quarterback...who knows? It wouldn't shock me to see y'all pull off an upset.

I think LSU will be able to run the ball fairly well against Iowa. The Hawk's defense will be tough, but not stifling. Iowa's defense must get pressure on Jennings. LSU's offensive line is meh imo and Jennings is a young quarterback with limited experience. No LSU fan can truthfully say what they are expecting from him. He's got time to prepare and he has two receivers that can and will just torch and shred the Iowa secondary. Iowa can key on these two and double coverage them and maybe get an interception here or there. If they can apply pressure on him and knock him around...he may get a little shaky and may make some bad plays.

I think this will really be a great game.

I think this is going to be a fun game to watch with Jennings making his first full start. I don't know how Iowa is going to prepare - there is no tape. I am confident that Cameron is going to have him ready to go. We are going to see some stuff we've never seen by ourselves.

Here's to a good clean game.

TE on a LB will probably happen a lot. Where Iowa goes down, if they do, is if they have to throw the ball, and the D gets winded. Or in any instance that they don't control TOP. Iowa needs to score at least 24, control the clock, and let the D win the game. In this particular game, that is asking a lot from a still developing team. tOSU and MSU aren't bad teams. We were competitive, and in some cases beating both badly. For 2-3 quarters. I would expect a good game. I'm apprehensive about this Iowa team getting a win. Although having said this, this team does remind me a lot of 2008, where we lost early, developed, and took a run at the NC in 2009. I'm just not sure that either the 2012-2013, and next year's team has the same level of NFL talent on it though. I don't recall exactly, but I think there are still 6-8 players from those tow years that still get playing time in the NFL. As much as I would like it to be 2008 all over again, I'm not sure it is.

We'll find out quite a lot about just how much Iowa has improved this year in this game. We might find out things we really don't want to know.

Appreciate 8645's thoughts. Hope he doesn't mind if I add my two cents because I don't exactly agree with everything (my thoughts in bold).

quote:

Iowa breakdown:

QB - Rudock is a RS Soph in his first year as starter. He is very smart and has an accurate arm. He is very little threat to run. He struggles some with deep throws and throwing in the wind. We have no good depth behind him

Rudock has definitely been a game manager and can be hot and cold. Overcomes mistakes well. He actually runs pretty well, but is now in two knee braces so won't be as mobile. We do have a RS frosh CJ Beathard as his backup who took the battle for starting QB into summer camp. Beathard has a much stronger arm and is also a better runner, but not as good a game manager. His tools may eventually allow him to take over the starting role.

Agree with most of this with a couple of exceptions. Bullock is a decent runner, not poor. Canzeri has gotten better as the season wore on, but is not a tough runner and can get dinged. He's third string because he's the third best RB on the team. Daniels probably won't be heard from as he hasn't played since mid-season, but we love his potential as a Shonn Greene starter kit.

FB - Two decent lead blockers who have been improving.

Very underrated and underappreciated FBs who can come out of the backfield and catch the ball on screens. Have stoned several LB on iso plays this year.

TE - We can go 5 deep. 86 Fiedorowicz is 6-7 senior and clutch; can't break a tackle. 87 Duzey is a stud in the making. Out ran the entire OSU secondary for a long scores this year.

Other TEs not mentioned are Hamilton, Krieger-Coble and Kittle. We ran 3TE sets a bunch which generate a bunch of matchup issues for defenses as any of the three are good receivers as well. Pick your poison.

OL - Good overall. C Blythe is great. LG Boffeli is great and has really improved. LT Scherff is a stud but lacks consistency. RG we rotate two guys. RT Van Sloten has been solid but really struggled as a senior. He has a hard time with fast athletic guys.

I think he's selling the OL short here. Very few sacks given up. The guards can get bullrushed from time to time, but zone blocking gives them help with initial double teams. Very athletic bunch who don't carry much body fat at all. Scherff will join Gallery, Bulaga and Reiff in a long line of great LTs at Iowa. Our best recruit for next year as he is a 1st rounder this year as a junior, but will be returning for his senior season.

WR - Poor. 11 Martin-Manley is the go to guy. 22 Powell has elite speed.

I would agree that WR is not a strength of the team, but he sells this a little short here. Martin-Manly is a solid possession receiver. Tevaun Smith (#4) has really come on as the season has progressed. Powell hasn't really played much, but is quick. Also spot duty for Shumpert, Vandeberg and Hillyer who aren't horrible, but won't strike fear into the hearts of DBs.

DL - Very solid and much improved. Will benefit from Alvis playing. Our DT use to sit back and pretty much spy the QB and then fail to stop him running. Our DE use to run too far up field and leave huge holes for a QB to run through. They play with good leverage.

Role of the DL is to take up blockers to allow LBs to run free and make tackles. Also contain in their lanes with upfield pressure on the passer. Tackles are better than the DEs, but all are improving. Will do some stunting with twists and other DL games.

LB - We start three SR with a ton of experience. They have played their best this season. 31 Hitchens is the best tackling and run stoping LB LSU will have faced all year.

Best unit on the team, with TEs a close second. Kirksey is a guy that just anchors his side, Morris in the middle was a Lott Award finalist and Hitchens has been playing the best of the three, with his best games of the season against Michigan and Nebraska. All three were Butkus Award candidates.

CB -19 Lowery - big play ability but makes some poor plays. Similar to Mills. 14 King a true FR who has improved all year long. He shut down Michigan's Gallon late in the year.

Lowery might be dinged and will be a mid-round draft pick in April. King has been solid and improving as you would expect a true frosh to. Also play some nickel with Draper, Lomax and Fleming as alternates.

S - Very poor 5 Miller SR one of the worst Safeties to start at Iowa in a long time. 37 Lowdermilk very poor as well. Both bite on PA a lot.

He's being a little tough on the two starting safeties for the nations #10 defense. If they were that bad our defense wouldn't be nearly as effective. They have been burned on broken coverage (Lowdermilk in particular), but have improved in this area. Both fill on the run very effectively with Lowdermilk being the more physical of the two. Miller is the QB of the defense and a vital cog in their success.

Special teams. K Meyer is good but poor in the clutch. P Kornbrath is poor. Kick coverage is good. KR is very poor. PR is decent.

Meyer is solid, but has had to kick in some rough conditions. Decent leg and range to 50 yards. Kornbrath is inconsistent. Has killed several inside the 10, but can also shank especially when trying to flip the field. Cotton is average as a KO returner, but does have enough top end speed to break one. Punt returner is Martin-Manley who ran two back for TDs against W. Michigan, but hasn't done much since. Solid possession guy who doesn't make many mistakes.

thanks for the breakdown. Ya'll are a lot higher on your individual units than I am on LSU's.

QB- true freshman, can run and looked composed in his one chance. We will see.

RB's- HIll and Magee are exceptional

FB- Neighbors is a overachieving great college blocker who almost always makes good contact with the right guy. Copeland is huge and tough but misses most blocks but is good short yardage running and a threat to catch the ball out of the back field

TE- not used

OL - has some potiential talent, hard to get a handle on, seem somewhat average or maybe a little better than average.

WR- great, best unit on the team, Landry is strong, sneaky fast and catches everything. OBJ, not as good of hands but very dynamic. Some other potiential talent there in Boone and Durel.

DT's- not much depth and the starters are OK. DT EGo can be hard to handle at times.

DE's- they are on the field doing what they do

LB's - other than kwon Alexander you don't even notice they are on the field other than when you see RB's run past them.

CB's- two true freshman who will be very good to great by the time they leave LSU. Right now they are good

Safetys- Loston can deliever a hit when he meets up with the runner, not much in coverage. Jefferson, true freshman, seems athletic. Martin average in coverage and average in tackling.

It sounds like from what you guys are saying, we need to get a TE/LB mismatch and throw at it when we're not running the ball, which we will do, successful or otherwise.

There are some intangibles that might allow us to win, but on paper, I just don't see anything to make me really confident for us, other than to say, I think we'll play you tougher than you'd expect.

Your only problem is watching film....... Mett was grounded in the pocket, Jennings gives this O a different dimension. 200+ from Hill and company, 80-100 from Jennings + 150 passing LSU 41, Iowa 27

Off topic. I'm stopping in Northern Georgia on the way down to fly fish for trout. I've driven through Lookout Mountain, and the mountain pass by Chattanooga several times, and finally this year I'm going to go fly fishing in the mountain streams. Weather permitting.

Good substance here. Bottom line: Rantards can put away any notions of this being a cake walk. I'm looking forward to a competitive game and a stand-out performance from our new QB.
