"Because the Internet"

Anybody check it out yet? I haven't had a chance to (not enough room on my phone to DL it), but I've been looking forward to it for months now. I've liked almost everything he's put out.

I did see a thread on here about some sort of script or whatever...may check that out once I get the album.

Any good?

It's pretty "Meh". Has a few good songs but the rest is pretty average. It's not as shitty as ROYALTY but nowhere near as good as his other works.

I like it. First listen, it was just alright, I preferred Camp. After reading the screenplay (which includes short scenes) and seeing the short film which also ties in to the album + script, it's way cooler than Camp. Musically he's improved, but the really cool thing about this album is the concept and the fact that he's apparently been living out this story including playing a character in recent interviews and even did some cool stuff on twitter/Instagram.

It's kind of hard to explain some of the stuff he did, that was my best attempt.

I think that may explain his strange recent behavior.

That's good to hear. And I was disappointed in ROYALTY when it first came out...I didn't hate it, but I was wanting it to be better. But it's grown on me over time and now there are some songs from there that are some of my favorite CG songs.

Camp seems tough to beat because it was just so good IMO. But I am hopeful for BtI. I actually just cleared some space on my phone and DL'd it. So I'll be checking it out for the next 30 minutes or so and then on the way home. I'm interested to check out the concept/script stuff, but I'd like the songs to stand on their own though, and for them to be good without needing additional input from other sources. We'll see, I guess.

I thought it was great, definitely grows on you.

The screenplay made the songs even cooler

Just found a good review. A rare positive one for Gambino, the writer also talks about why a lot of critics hate Gambino. LINK

It's incredible, he has improved greatly as a rapper and producer. Thus is the most ambitious album"experience" ever

I'd have to disagree with this part of the statement. After Camp released, he hasn't released anything up to par with his earlier work. He's actually gotten worse lyrically.

I read that yesterday. It's easy to see why he gets shite on by mainstream guys/fans, but I've always loved his shite.

And I didn't like the album AT ALL the first time I listened, but admittedly I was at work and half listening. I agree that it definitely grows on you. There is a bit too much shite going on for my taste, but it's not as bad as I originally thought. I do think it's a step down fro him though.

The album is just so....weird. Not just the music (and "music"), but everything about it. When he actually is rapping though, his flow is as good/better than ever.

I may check out the script along with the album and see how that works, but for now, I'm jamming to it and letting a lot of it sink in.

Also, after that article, I didn't realize Camp got the hate that it did...I loved Camp.

Yea, Camp just got shite on by critics. I loved it and the people who already were Gambino fans loved it too. But that's a small group, I think the 1.6 from pitchfork really pissed him off and he decided he had to change things if he wanted to gain respect from critics and the people who hated Camp, Culdesac etc.

I'm a big Gambino fan and I liked Royalty. What is the main complaint about it?

And FWIW, bought the new album and have only given it one listen all the way through. Going to check out all the extra stuff he has done for it like the website and what not but as of now I liked Camp better.

Same here. I thought Royalty was pretty damn good. I have listen to BOTI multiple times and I came to the conclusion that most tracks are pretty good although some are hit and miss. It definitely grew on me. I still think that Gambino can put out a better product though. I have a feeling that his best is yet to come.

Looks like Gambino is projected to sell 80-90K in the 1st week. Double the initial projections and the 40-50K that Camp did in 2011.

As for Royalty, I liked it too. But the main complaint was that it didn't sound like any of his previous work for the most part. It was just way different than Camp and Culdesac and a lot of people who had been fans of his didnt like that.

Yeah, not a big fan of this newer CD. I understand he is looking to branch out as a musician, but his older stuff was so much more enjoyable for me. I know the "complete" experience is reading the script and everything, but it's music. I don't want something else to get it, I just want to enjoy the music that he puts out.

Royalty was good but it seemed like he tried too hard to mix in other rappers on it instead of just going at it by himself like he did with everything else
