FYI: Carmack and Romero do not speak to each other to this day

Interesting. I knew they had a big falling out many years ago but didn't know they hadn't eventually patched things up.

I probably mentioned this in another thread several weeks ago but loaded up Doom about 6 months ago for nostalgia sake. It's still a ton of fun and I had forgotten how balls-fast it is compared to modern shooters.

Doom 1 & 2 and Command & Conquer were the first 2 games I played "online" via peer to peer dial up connection. My buddy and I would wake up at 5 AM on Saturdays to play so neither of our families would need their home phone for a while.

I think their relationship is ok but they just don't talk anymore. They are opposite personalities so I can't believe they ever worked together.

I thought his last response re dev time is interesting. I played doom 3 years after it came out and thought it was terrible. Huge fan of 1/2.

I'm guessing that he is referring to those games always on delay. Taking your time like GTAV is great but to always delay a game like south park may be kind of what he is getting at.

Why can't they make fps like doom nowadays. I love looking for hidden areas and the puzzle level design.

That was discussed during the video I linked actually. John Romero is not a fan of fps's these days.

I think we should co op this game soon. That would be fun as hell. BTW read the steam forum on this game, people complain because the graphics suck... what have we become...

Because it would be an outdated design concept as far as AAA titles go. I'm sure there are some Indie games out there that capture what you're describing, but don't expect it from the blockbuster market that demands a "gritty" and "cinematic" experience.

John Romero and Richard Garriott would get along - both claim to dislike many of the products of advancing video game technology over the past 20 years, and both are completely disingenuous about it.

The invention of games like Doom and Ultima will always be primarily tied to necessity, in this case necessity being the limitations of hardware 20-30 years ago. Let's not pretend that making those games the way they are was some kind of cutting edge "choice" over the alternative of grand, sweeping narratives or pre-rendered cutscenes. They simply made the most of what they had to work with.

Seeing as to how he made Dikatana, I don't think the industry has lost much.

There was a remake of the 90's FPS "Rise of the Triad" which had modern graphics with the ludicrous speed of the original game.

Giant Bomb did a pretty hilarious quick look for it here.

The Serious Sam games (1 & 2 at least) I think were trying to serve fans of the Doom games. There are "HD" remakes of those but I don't know how truly "HD" they are. I only played the originals.

I know you were speaking in generalities, but if you ever see me on Steam playing something (it can be rare these days), I'd be totally down for playing some co-op Doom.

But I'm still trying to play through "The Last of Us" not to mention "A Link Between Worlds."

Too much to play.
