December 10, 1972 The American League votes unanimously to adopt the designated hitter rule on a trial basis for three years. The concept, that permits a team to designate a player to bat in place of the pitcher, will be implemented in some measure by most collegiate and professional leagues with the National League and Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball's Central League being the notable exceptions.

It's sadder that a fishing trip cost the NL the DH. Now we're forced to watch "Once every five day players" hit.

I don't really follow baseball..why did only the AL adopt this and not the NL?

Why has it lasted into today's game and not either gone away or the NL adopted as well? It just seems odd to me that half the league plays by a different set of rules than the other half.

The NL was voting on it and the owner of a team was fishing and his rep couldn't get in touch with him so I believe the rep abstained from the vote which resulted in the NL not adopting the DH

I am an American League guy, Rangers are my team....

I HATE THE DH

When the Rangers play in National League Parks, is when I am most excited to watch. It's real baseball

NL baseball is borderline unwatchable without the DH

I prefer NL rules, but I love the fact the leagues are still different.

There's a DH or an EH allowed in high school... is that not real baseball? I hate the "real baseball" argument. In high school pitchers are usually the best athletes and play every day. In the major leagues, these athletes are not the premier baseball players, but specialiced pitching individuals. It would be "real baseball" if pitchers played other positions every game.

It's a basic tennant of baseball that if you bat you play the field, and if you play the field you bat. NL = real baseball. But I do like that the leagues are different.

not really. I love baseball and played in college but it doesn't make it A LOT better to someone who doesn't understand the game and calls it boring

so I could expect my gf who has never been to a MLB game to understand pitch selection, hit and runs, suicide squeezes, and a 12-6 curve ball?
