My wife has decided that her magnalite stuff has lived long enough at about 20 years old.

She's no chef, but I keep hoping she will be, or maybe I will, but that's another story.

Not sure what to tell you, other than we cook on a gas stove?

Not even sure what a budget should be... $1000 or less?

This will be a Christmas gift, so I could buy it in stages if need be...

Help!

I love love love the Le Creuset enameled cast iron pieces that I have. I certainly don't have a set, but I acquired a few over time. I have a round 7 quart in blue and an oval roaster in apple green (6 quart, I think). I also have a cute little red apple shaped pot that I use for baked beans.

I'm sure you'll get other suggestions. Lodgeware is more affordable.

I have my moms 40 y/o magnalite and my 20 y/o magnalite set. Le creuset is probably what I would upgrade to.

If she's cared for it pretty well, that Magnalite still has a lot of life left in it. If I didn't have a pretty new set, I'd offer to purchase your old set from you. I'd definitely clean them up and put them on craigslist or something. People are always looking for old Magnalite.

I definitely recommend adding to her/your collection with some Le Creuset. The off brand enamel coated cast iron is good, too, but it's a good bit heavier than Le Creuset- that's what gives them their good reputation. I have a 12 inch saute pan and a 4qt ant 6 qt dutch oven. I rarely use the smaller pot because I like to make soups in mine.

Also a Le Creuset tip I just learned on this board- The outlet store in Foley, AL will ship to you, so that's a good way to get new pieces for cheaper. Also, check at Marshall's/TJ Maxx every once in a while. They will occasionally get a shipment of stuff and sell it for almost nothing.

I have Le Creuset, and have zero complaints except that they discontinue to colors frequently. My color is some kind of dark green, they aren't making it anymore. Other than that, it has been awesome cookware. Cant see myself cooking on anything else.

If you are willig to spend upwards of $1000 then get a small all clad set of stainless. Accent it with a couple pieces of le crueset. Done.
I don't have all clad, but I had a lot of cooking experience on it with the ex... Cooks really well. If you want to get several different pieces id recommend going with the emeril set of stainless (I like mine), le crueset (I have 3 pieces) and a couple of non stick pans (I have all clad/ cheap version).

Magnalite should last forever, mines older than that and would not trade for anything

this. my set is 15 years old and doesn't show any signs of giving out. i'd guess my mom's set is probably 40 years old and still going strong.

i just picked up a lodge enameled dutch oven a few weeks ago. obviously not Staub or Le Creuset but I've used it several times already, and I'm quite happy so far.

An emery cloth flapper disc(talk to the Depot or Lowes guy) will make your wifes twenty year old stuff look new.

Thanks all so far! I'll look into every suggestion.

And yes, i have no doubt that there is anything wrong with what she has...

But she's difficult to buy for, so if she asks for something... I aim to please!

Color choices, huh?

My bad... I missed that key word in your original post "wife".

Myself I kept the Magnalite and got rid of the wife.

Yes, LC is nice. But so is the non-shiny-outside All Clad.

If you want to give her something amazing, how about a copper skillet lined with silver, engraved with her name, handcrafted by a French artisan? Just $500: LINK

My Magnalite is 35 years old and good as new. However, I've read that new Magnalites (like made in the last 5 years) are not made the same and are of lower quality.

I could go on forever about this but to be brief.

The walmart Magnalite is not the same and is imported from China. Nothing is the same except the name they bought from Wagner years ago.

A company American Culinary Corp makes the original Wagnerware Magnalite now called Magware.

I might be a little cautious ordering from them however, I understand the company is not doing that great, looking for investors and not to mentioned they recently screwed me out of a knob I ordered.
