Concealed carry permit

Looking to start the process of purchasing my first firearm and obtaining a concealed carry permit. I've been recommended to check out a Glock 17. I don't know anything about firearms. Where do I start? Where in BR should I go about shopping for a handgun. New/used? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

First, OB, they will give more info than you can handle

Second, 17 is a great gun, but better options for concealed carry.

Most retailers prices are within 5-10% of each other so no advantage one place or the other.

Can save a ton buying used, personally I would have to trust the source buying used. Think most retailers offer warranties of some sort on used guns.

Online is your best bet, hands down.

OP, for your purposes, go to Precision on Siegen. I personally do not like their staff but they are good for beginners and offer good training classes and even rent guns to shoot. Go spend some time and money shooting every gun they have, then decide. Your first gun should not be a CC gun though. You would not want to shoot mine more than 20 shots at a time.

i have no idea

I was just thinking it might be a good idea to own another gun for a while and make sure you are comfortable owning and shooting a gun before you want to carry one with you at all times

If you have a buddy who has an NRA membership or if you live in Texas has a "Don't Tread on Me" flag in yard ask him. If neither is available ALL places have classes. And then the CHL can come with a class. A lot do but some places let you bypass it just for the cash. Which for you I would not recommend,

Don't listen to these fools. Shooting ain't that hard. Buy the gun you want that will do the job you want it to do. Then watch a few youtube videos and spend a day or two at the range and you're golden.

I'm joking. Don't really do that.

call gordon hutchinson-
he offers the concealed class-
get that ball rolling because it takes a few weex to months to have the license in hand-
you don't have to own a gun to take it, & you aren't forced to carry concealed once you have it-
it will teach you lots about gun safety & handling, & it's better to just get it out of the way now if you have the time-

Find a range that will: 1) Rent you multiple guns 2) Have an instructor who will teach you the proper steps to handling a firearm. If you're going to carry I strongly suggest you take classes beyond the nra beginners class. Look on YouTube for the first person defender videos. Those people have classes in Slidell which will better help you understand how to react in a situation where a firearm is needed. Good luck!!

Great advice guys. I'm in no hurry here.

Friend of mine is starting a program in Lafayette. Think it may be worth the weekly commute. Just will be out of the country the first 2 weeks it begins

This really cant be said enough. And like sammich said, go to a shooting range and shoot every handgun they have. Yes a 17 is a great gun, but for me the grip isnt the most comfortable so I use a different gun. One Im comfortable using if the situation ever arises where I have to use my cc.

DEFINITELY get more handling and shooting pistols before you CC. IMHO, the shooting involved with the CCW class is retarded. I could've passed with my eyes closed. You shoot 40 shots IIRC. You would need at least 1000 rounds out of a gun and at a minimum 4hrs of instruction before I would feel comfortable telling you it is okay to CCW.

You can't ever have enough training!!!

Once you settle on a few guns, then ask the OB about which you should buy. We might be able to offer some suggestions you haven't thought of yet

Remember this..... When you draw that weapon, you are going to kill someone. They are not tools for scaring people away!

I think what Cap Crunch is saying is that getting a concealed handgun permit implies that you are carrying it for personal protection. This implies that, if necessary, you will point your weapon at a human being and kill them without hesitation at the instance required to save your own life. Bringing a gun into a tense situation is a serious decision and not everyone can pull the trigger without hesitation. So I suggest you start with some personal examination on whether you could do that.

After that check out the Glock 26, it's a smaller version of the 17.
