7 in 10 Doctors Boycotting California's Obamacare Exchange

Uh-oh.

quote:

An estimated seven out of every 10 physicians in deep-blue California are rebelling against the state's Obamacare health insurance exchange and won't participate, the head of the state's largest medical association said.

“It doesn't surprise me that there's a high rate of nonparticipation,” said Dr. Richard Thorp, president of the California Medical Association.

Thorp has been a primary care doctor for 38 years in a small town 90 miles north of Sacramento. The CMA represents 38,000 of the roughly 104,000 doctors in California.

“We need some recognition that we’re doing a service to the community. But we can’t do it for free. And we can’t do it at a loss. No other business would do that,” he said.

California offers one of the lowest government reimbursement rates in the country -- 30 percent lower than federal Medicare payments. And reimbursement rates for some procedures are even lower.

In other states, Medicare pays doctors $76 for return-office visits. But in California, Medicare’s reimbursement is $24, according to Dr. Theodore M. Mazer, a San Diego ear, nose and throat doctor.

In other states, doctors receive between $500 to $700 to perform a tonsillectomy. In California, they get $160, Mazer added.

Only in September did insurance companies disclose that their rates would be pegged to California’s Medicaid plan, called Medi-Cal. That's driven many doctors to just say no.

I can assure you the Doctors won't starve. They provide a service that people are wiling to pay for in cash.

Some on this board think you make too much, of course they are the same people who think they don't make enough.

I for one, don't want to live in a country where a Dr. makes the same as a high school teacher.

Actually, and maybe this is an intended consequence, but companies are buying doctors practices because of the law.

However, some doctors are upset and have reported to begin talks to UNIONIZE. Not good IMO...

I for one don't begrudge doctors anything they make because they worked a lot harder than I ever did to get into a position to make it, much less all the loans and such they had to take on to get there.

24-48 hours shifts in training? Eff that, you can have it and all the money that goes with it!

They are our great hope to put an end to this shite.

The only thing I do envy them for is having something they were that passionate about to get through.

re: 7 in 10 Doctors Boycotting California's Obamacare Exchange

And I will add.

We tried working for a hospital. It paid very very well, better than private practice. That lasted about a year. Why? Because hospitals MANDATE and coerce doctors to ration and provide care, in a way that is more profitable for the hospital, not in the way that is in the best interest of the patient. And this was working for a "non for profit" hospital. They are paying the salary so do as you are told or else...

Now we make less, but we have more control of patient care. How long will this last? I predict not very long, but we have been preparing for much lower salaries for a long time. We have been living below our means, living with about 30% of what we make every month. Some people would look down at us, because we live in a regular house, with average cars. I have friends that have said "I expect my doctor to drive an expensive car, or I will think he sucks". Most of the nurses and techs spend more for lunch every day, while we pack our lunch to work. But you know, now that the shite is hitting the fan, we can take whatever comes, maintaing our dignity, and our control of how we treat our patients. And btw, I retired a year and a half ago, because I don't want to deal with all this shite. I am my husband enabler right now.

My wife, an RN, Intensive Care Nurse, retired recently, mostly because of Obamacare. Last week her mother was in the hospital. My wife was looking at her EKG. One of the staff members commented, "thank God, there is someone here who can read and EKG".

You Obama voters are getting what you asked for. Equality

Who are you to determine if they are overpaid or not?

I'd rather and overpaid, competent, and happy doctor than the opposite.
