With the state of the Wii U and the rise of Tablet gaming and smartphone gaming eating into hand held gaming profit margins, is Nintendo on its way to being a software only company like Sega?

How would you feel if this happened?

People have been saying this for a looooong time, yet Nintendo keeps doing their thing. My opinion is that no, they will not become software focused.

This has been said for a long time, especially about phones and tablets eating into their market share. However, the 3DS is doing great and both of those competing products have been out for a while now.

I'd be sad about it. Sega still makes games (and good ones) but they are largely a shell of their former selves. I'd be afraid of the same happening to Nintendo.

I could see Nintendo going handheld only before going software only.

3ds is doing great so no issue there. The wii u is struggling but it is still early and it's picking up. I don't see them being software only anytime soon.

Agreed, I feel like there needs to be a family friendly console out there.

I hope they persevere on, no matter how bad it gets.

I could also see them becoming a hand held only company as well.

I do not think they will. Wouldn't be surprised to see virtual console stuff put on iOS and Android though.

Would never happen as long as they are making consoles.

Nope.

They weathered the Gamecube, they'll weather this as well. What's sad is that the Wii U is a fine console, better than the Wii even. And honestly, for the growth of the VG industry, they have a much better foundation to grow than anyone else.

If the DLC craze grows to start crashing and game budgets continue to exceed $100 million making giant blockbusters the only way to survive... few companies will survive and Nintendo will most likely be one of them.

They'd be gone. They'd never make software only. If it really does come to that, then they aren't the same company anymore. That would have to be the result of some big change in leadership and company attitude.

This is a massive problem in the industry.

Big problem in the movie industry as well.

I wonder if they would ever make a bad arse hand held that was their only piece of hardware and focus on that exclusively.

A hand held that was portable and could also hook up to the TV like the Vita adapter.

They don't go for realistic looking graphics but their games are beautiful

Completely agree. That's why I often stress their importance. They are the only ones focusing on power , efficiency and getting the most bang for your buck.

I'm not saying they're perfect, but they are mitigating technological advances well. They should be celebrated for that rather than demonized.

They are trying to keep things affordable and efficient.

I don't think it'll happen.

The Wii U had a pretty poor launch but it seems to be picking up some steam lately. I think the marketing hurt it early on. They didn't really promote it that much or differentiate it from the Wii.

Not sure. I like the novelty of Nintendo consoles and games.

You also have to commend them for going against the grain and trying to push the envelope as far as gameplay is concerned as opposed to just having great graphics.

I don't understand the coorelation there? The 3DS eShop is absolutely pitiful, so it's not like they'd be losing out. Having Super Mario World on mobile would only help their business.

But this really hasn't happened much lately.

I think if they keep making GREAT games for kids (not all of their stuff is) then they will be around.

Everyear there is a new set of kids that are old enough to game and gamer parents will want to start with the classics if they are there.

I know that I am in that boat with my two kids.
