If you could build the perfect deer rifle

for YOUR needs, what would it be? I'm not trying to spark a huge debate here, I'm just genuinely curious what the opinions are here. I'm considering purchasing an "end-all, be-all" deer rifle after having a Ruger MKII .270 and Browning A Bolt 300 wsm stolen. I'm currently shooting a Savage axis 7mm 08, but I'm going to upgrade at some point. I've shot a wide range of deer calibers, and I'm a proponent of the lower recoil rounds. Anyway, follow this format in your answer. NO BUDGET
Primary usage:
Caliber:
Stock:
Barrel/action:
Optics:

Mine (what I'm considering getting):

Usage: Dense hardwoods with occasional 300 yard shot across crop fields
Cal: .308
Stock: Wood Laminate
Action/barrell: Stainless Rem 700 22"
Optics: Sightron Big Sky II or III 2.5-10x50

***I edited to say no budget, but I'm going to stay true to mine.

And let's cap the budget at $1300.

Can't build a perfect deer rifle for less. My glass alone would be almost double that figure

Usage hardwood bottoms and huge grass patches.

Winchester model 70 300 win mag, stainless steel, with a heavy McMillan stock. Topped with a leupold vx3 4-12x50.

Sounds very similar to my dad's rifle I deer hunt with:

Usage: (same as yours)
Cal.: .260 Remington (6.5mm bullet in a 308 case; VERY accurate)
Stock: (same as yours)
Action/Barrel: Stainless Rem 700 22" (With sporter barrel profile - very thin)
Optics: Leupold VX3 2.5x-8x by 40mm

Absolutely love that rifle. It is beautiful and handles very well moving around in the woods and in stands. The slim barrel profile helps a lot.

re: If you could build the perfect deer rifle

For me I would probably get a Browing X-bolt Composite Stalker in .308.

.22 inch barrel and composite stock (i'm very rough on hunting guns)

I'd put Leupold rings on it with a Nikon Buckmaster scope in 4-12x50.

This is strickly for deer hunting. The .308 is the perfect round for that. Short action gives you a lighter weight rifle (6lbs 5oz). Recoil isn't bad. And it's a perfect compromise for any shot from 5-300 yds.

IMHO.

Not at all. Probably the most versatile 600 meter rifle cartridge on the planet.

When you can load such a wide range of readily available bullets into this rife it truly can be everything from a varmint gun to a Moose gun.
